SJHL update

Press Release

Steve Schroeder flung a puck toward the net and much to his amazement that was the winning goal as Humboldt beat Melville 2-1 in overtime in game three of the Credit Union Cup final. The Broncos now lead the series 2-games-to-1 with game four slated for Sunday in Melville.

Schroeder admitted after the game to not immediately seeing the puck get underneath Travis Bosch and into the net. Schroeder simply gathered up the puck along the wall and shot it toward the net and it beat Bosch along the ice.

The game was an intense affair with over 1800 fans at the Elgar Petersen Arena treated to a contest that had an atmosphere similar to a game seven.

Both of the regulation time goals were scored late in the first period. The Broncos capitalized on a Melville mistake while shorthanded as Matthew Kirzinger used his speed to generate a 2-on-1 up ice and getting the puck over the line on the second attempt, taking Bosch into the net with it. The officials had a brief conversation, but the goal was never really in question.

On the same powerplay, the Mils got back to even terms. Jordan Reeve’s point shot started the play and Tyler Murray finished it off for his team leading 7th of the playoffs.

Mathieu Larochelle, who has been outstanding in the series, made a number of tough saves in the third period to keep his team in the game. In all, he kicked out 31-shots and lowered his goals against average to 2.28 and his save percentage increase to .928.

Bosch finished with 29-saves, a number of key ones for him came in the second period. His goals against also came down to 2.27 and he also has a save percentage of .928 in the playoffs.
