TERRIERS SPREAD OUT OFFENCE IN WIN OVER LUMBER KINGS

CAMROSE, Alta. – Brent Wold scored once and added an assist to lead a balanced offence as the Portage Terriers opened their 2011 RBC Cup with a 5-2 win over the Pembroke Lumber Kings on Sunday afternoon at the Edgeworth Centre.

Five players scored goals and 10 had at least one point for the Terriers, who held the Lumber Kings off the scoresheet at five-on-five and killed six of eight Pembroke power plays.

Wold, Cody Kostecki, Brendan Harms, Kajon McKay and Shaquille Merasty scored the goals for Portage (1-0),which won its first meeting with Pembroke since beating the Lumber Kings in five games to win the 1973national championship.

Jonathan Milley and Matthew Zay both recorded power play goals for Pembroke (0-1), which outshot the Terriers 31-22 but could not beat Portage netminder Jason Kasdorf, who made 29 saves in Player of the Gameperformance.

The Terriers will have a chance at a 2-0 start when they face the two-time defending champions from Vernon Monday afternoon (3:30 p.m. MT), while the Lumber Kings meet Wellington in Monday’s late game (7:30 p.m.MT).
