Mustangs Hire Derek Stuart as New Head Coach

The Calgary Mustangs hockey club is pleased to announce the hiring of Derek Stuart as the new Head Coach and Assistant General Manager. The Calgary native had served as an assistant coach under James Poole with the Okotoks Oilers for the past three seasons. The Oilers made the playoffs all three seasons and advanced to game 7 of the South Final on two occasions."I am very excited about the chance to be a head coach at this level. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to the challenge ahead."

Prior to his coaching position with the Oilers, Stuart was the assistant coach with the Midget AAA Calgary Buffaloes from 2006-2010. In four years behind the bench the Buffaloes earned births in back to back Telus Cup National Championships winning a silver medal along with a fourth place finish. The Buffs also won 2 League Championships, 2 Pacific Regional Titles, and captured the Mac's Midget Tournament in 2008-2009.

Prior to coaching, Derek’s playing background included three years of Jr. A hockey in B.C., NCAA Hockey with Bemidji State University and a National Championship with the Mount Royal Cougars. Stuart will also be bringing on new assistant coaches behind the bench next season.
