Hitmen take Game 5

Joel Broda scored twice and set up another to lead the Calgary Hitmen to a 6-1 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets in Game 5 of the 2009 WHL Championship series on Thursday, April 7th.

It’s the second win for the Hitmen over the Rockets in as many nights, and leaves them down three games to two in the best-of-seven series. The Hitmen won 6-2 in Kelowna on Wednesday night after the Rockets had taken the first three games of the series.

Alex Plante – with a goal and an assist – Kris Foucault, Brett Sonne and Rigby Burgart also scored for the Hitmen, who outshot the visiting Rockets 50-19 in the contest, while Brandon Kozun, Jason MacDonald and Cody Sylvester each picked up two assists.

Cody Almond – with his 10th of the playoffs – scored the only goal for the Rockets, who have been outscored 12-3 in the last two games after outscoring the Hitmen 10-4 in the first three games of the series.

Martin Jones turned aside 18 of 19 shots he faced to take the win. Mark Guggenberger made 44 saves in a losing cause.

The Rockets will host the Hitmen for Game 6 on Saturday night in Kelowna, B.C.

Kelowna leads best-of-seven series 3-2.
