Bobcats Name Kerr Head Coach

Press Release

LONG ISLAND, N.Y.  -- The New York Bobcats are proud to announce that Kevin Kerr has been hired as the team’s new head coach.  Kerr comes to the Bobcats by way of Atlanta, where this past season he guided the EJHL South’s Atlanta Knights to the Empire Junior Hockey League playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 33-5 record.

Kerr’s coaching career began as head coach of the North Bay Skyhawks of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.  His next stop was the minor professional International Hockey League where he guided the Flint Generals to the playoffs.  Kerr then joined the Atlanta Knights in their inaugural season where he guided the first-year team to a Southeast Junior Hockey League championship.  The Knights finished as runner-up at the USA Hockey National Championships that year.  Kerr then took his team to the Junior B level with in Metropolitan Junior Hockey League.   Once there he established the Knights as a perennial national contender.  In his first season in the Met he guided the Knights to a 43-1-0-1 record.  Kerr’s Knights were the MET league regular season champs, captured the Keegan Cup and he was named MJHL Coach of the Year.  The Knights finished the season ranked second in the country after losing the National Championship game 4-3 in overtime.  Kerr remained in Atlanta until the 2011 when he took a job with the Green Mountain Glades.  In Green Mountain he was put in charge of both the Eastern Junior Hockey League and Empire Junior Hockey League teams.  He returned to Atlanta this past season after Green Mountain was moved to Portland, Maine.

As a player Kerr was selected in the 3rd round (56th overall) of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.  He played more than 1000 career games throughout his professional career.  He was named to eight consecutive minor pro All-Star teams and set the then-record for most career goals scored by a minor professional player.

"I'm very excited about being a part of the NY Bobcats,” said Kerr.  “They have a great reputation of being a first-class program and I'm proud to be joining the team.   I am looking forward to working with the great coaching staff already in place as we develop and promote young hockey players on to their full potential, both on and off the ice."
