NOJHL concludes play at Central Canada Cup Challenge with loss

TERREBONNE, Que. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Selects finished competition at the Central Canada Cup Challenge showcase in Terrebonne, Que., going winless in five games after dropping a 5-1 decision Sunday to the Ontario Junior Hockey’s South-West conference all-stars.

The opening period of the 40-minute affair saw each side score once.

The OJHL’s Corey Kalk put his side on the board nearly six minutes into the contest only to see the NOJHL pull even at 8:06 courtesy of the Samuel Wilbur (Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) power play marker.

Blake Peavey (Espanola Rivermen) and Gavin Burbach (Soo Thunderbirds) drew assists on the tying goal.

It was all OJHL in the final frame however as they struck for four unanswered efforts in just over a 10-minute span to secure the victory.

Nick DeSimone tallied twice for the winners in the stanza while Vince Figliomeni and Liam Kerins supplied singles.

Niko Kovachis dished out three assists to aid the offensive cause of the winning side.

Evan Buitenhuis earned the triumph in net for the OJHL while Joel Horodziejczyk (Soo Thunderbirds) suffered the loss.

Player of the game laurels went to Kalk and to North Bay Trappers’ defencemen Shawn Tessier for the NOJHL.
