Final Day Results and Other Notes

Results from the Ivan Hlinka Tournament

Sweden defeated Finland 3-2 to claim the Bronze medal

In the Battle of the Host Countries, the Czech Republic took fifth place with a 4-3 victory over Slovakia.

The United States Heads home with a 6-5 victory over Switzerland to capture 7th pace.

I guess USA Hockey won't even post the score for a win.

Speaking of Switzerland, Yanick Weber, one of the best junior aged players to come out of that country has signed with the Montreal Canadiens. With the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League last year, he had 20 goals and 35 assists in 59 games. He was the Canadiens' third round selection in 2007. I believe he will be with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL this season.

The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors have signed their top two picks from the 2008 OHL Priority Selection. Forward Devante Smith-Pelly who was their 1st round selection had 38 goals and 39 assists with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens last season. The 5'11 forward also picked up 199 penalty minutes.

The team also came to terms with goaltender J.P. Anderson who was their second round choice. With the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget program, he had a 1.21 GAA and seven shutouts.

Colorado College got a commitment from Waterloo Blackhawks goaltender Joe Howe for the 2009-2010 season. Last year he was 13-5-1 with a 2.12 GAA and a .915SV%. The Colorado Tigers have seven recruits for the 2009 season and five of them will play in the USHL this season.

Rochester Institute of Technology got a late 2008 commitment from Shane Madolora who played for the Omaha Lancers last year. He had a 11-4-2 record with a 2.41 GAA and a .914SV%. He will be the second USHL alumni in this year's recruiting class for RIT.

Matt Smith who played for the Indiana Ice last year, will walk onto the University of Nebraska-Omaha for the 2008-2009 season. He had a goal, 5 assists, and 51 penalty minutes in 30 games last season. Nebraska-Omaha will have seven former USHL players in the 2008-2009 recruiting class.
