USHL Fall Classic Day One Wrap Up

The first day of the USHL Fall Classic is complete. Seven games were on the slate in the annual preseason event. All 14 USHL Member Clubs hit the ice in front of scouts from the NHL and collegiate hockey programs.

The day started off with a 9:30 AM contest at the IBP Ice Center as the Sioux Falls Stampede took on the Chicago Steel. After Chicago's Andrei Kuchin opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period, the Stampede scored the next four goals, including three in the third period, to earn a 4-1 victory. Dominic Zombo had a goal and one assist for the Stampede. He is the son former NHL player Rick Zombo who was the first ever player from the USHL selected in the NHL Draft. At the Tyson Events Center, the Lincoln Stars and Indiana Ice squared off in a 10:00 AM contest. The defending Clark Cup champion Indiana Ice jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period. Lincoln stormed back with two goals in the second stanza to even the game. After a scoreless third period and overtime session, the game went to a shootout where Indiana prevailed and captured a 4-3 victory. The Des Moines Buccaneers built a 3-0 lead vs. the Green Bay Gamblers then held off a comeback by the defending Anderson Cup champs by scoring late in the third period to take a 4-2 victory. D.J. Brett Gensler netted two shorthanded goals for the Youngstown Phantoms, the USHL's newest member, but it wasn't enough as the Omaha Lancers scored two in the second period and two in the third period to claim a 4-2 win. The USHL got their first look at Team USA as the Tri-City Storm met them in a 4:00 game. Team USA held the Storm to just 13 shots and received goals from two different defensemen, Frankie Simonelli and Justin Faulk, on their way to a 3-1 victory. The Fargo Force came out firing with 16 shots on goal in the first period vs. the Waterloo Black Hawks and heading into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. Waterloo found their scoring touch and scored the next three goals to skate away with the 4-2 victory. Nick Sorkin tallied two points (1g, 1a) for the Black Hawks. Day One of the USHL Fall Classic rounded out with the host Sioux City Musketeers playing the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in a rematch of last weekend's championship game at the Battle of Iowa. The game was tightly contested until the RoughRiders exploded for three goals in the final period, including two by Michael Parks, to earn the 4-1 victory. Despite being outshot 33-15, Cedar Rapids claimed victory as goaltender Troy Grosenick was solid in net making 32 saves.
