Tobias Rieder is OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Tobias Rieder of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 22 after scoring four goals and three assists for seven points in three games.

Last Tuesday night Rieder scored once and added two assists for three points helping the Rangers defeat the Plymouth Whalers in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals. Facing the London Knights in the Rogers Western Conference Championship Series, Rieder contributed to both Ranger goals in Game 1 on Thursday night scoring once and adding an assist despite the 3-2 overtime loss. The Rangers fell to the Knights 6-4 in Game 2 of the series on Sunday night but Rieder delivered a pair of shorthanded goals just 39 seconds apart to give him an OHL-best 13 goals so far this post-season in a game broadcasted to a national television audience on Sportsnet.

Rieder, a 19-year-old from Landshut, Germany, recorded 85 points in 60 games playing in his second OHL season with the Rangers and is an Edmonton Oilers prospect selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently first in OHL playoff scoring with 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 14 games.

Also considered for the award this week was Rangers’ defenceman Ryan Murphy who recorded seven points in three games including a goal and six assists, while rookie Max Domi of the London Knights scored two goals and one assist for three points in two games. In goal, Petr Mrazek of the Ottawa 67’s earned a pair of wins and suffered an overtime loss in three playoff starts while making an impressive 121 saves for a goals-against-average of 2.88 and save percentage of .931.
