Sweden Upends Switzerland, 5-4, in Overtime

Press Release

Sweden and Switzerland opened the 2012 Under-18 Four Nations Tournament with a fast-paced, physical contest at the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Ice Cube. Sweden earned the victory, 5-4, in overtime.

Switzerland first found the scoresheet early in the opening frame. Tim Wieser and Luka Meier eached scored less than two minutes apart and forced Sweden to call a timeout.
Sweden responded quickly, notching two goals of its own to even the game. Fabian Gunnarsson and Wilhelm Westlund notched the tallies for Sweden. Late in the stanza, Victor Crus Rydberg scored Sweden's third straight marker, giving the Swedes a 3-2 lead heading into the second period.

In the second period, Switzerland again came out quickly, as Kevin Fiala scored the equalizer on hard shot off an odd-man rush. Despite a flurry of special teams play, including a 5-on-3 for Switzerland, the teams remained at a stalemate after two periods of play.

It didn’t take Switzerland long to strike in the final frame, as Wieser netted the go-ahead goal, his second tally of the contest, at the 3:38 mark. Halfway through the period, however, Sweden came back once more, connecting on a three-pass play that knotted the game at four goals apiece.

At the end of 60 minutes, the two squads remained tied and headed into a five minute overtime period. Playing four-on-four, Sweden dominated play for 1:30 before Leon Bristedt buried the game-winning goal on a slap shot from the left point.

Sweden is in action next on Wednesday (Nov. 7) when they take on Finland at 3:30 p.m. EST. Switzerland and the United States will follow that tilt at 7:00 p.m.
