Steel Defenseman Chooses Northern Michigan University

Press Release

Chicago Steel defenseman Ryan Trenz has chosen to play collegiate hockey at Northern Michigan University following his USHL career.

“I visited NMU last summer and I really liked the campus,” Trenz said. “I went on the official visit earlier in January and got to meet the coaching staff and saw a game the next day. I really liked the facilities and the head coach Walt Kyle has a great background in coaching. The players were very good to me and everyone seemed very close on the team.”

Trenz has collected five assists and 44 penalty minutes in 29 games for the Steel this season. The 20-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri posted a season high plus-four rating while dishing out an assist in the 6-4 victory against Team USA on October 28th. The defenseman was selected by the Steel in the first round (7th overall) of the 2011 USHL Entry Draft last May.

Trenz will have a familiar face alongside him when he sets foot on campus as Steel goaltender Mathias Dahlstrom committed to Northern Michigan University last month.

“It will be nice going to Northern Michigan to play hockey with someone you know,” Trenz said. “We will probably end up rooming together and will continue our friendship that started here in Chicago.”

Dubuque Fighting Saints forward Shane Sooth and Gerard Hanson are two other USHL players committed to the school.

Northern Michigan University is located in Marquette, Michigan and is a member of the CCHA. A total of 12 USHL alumni are on the roster for the Wildcats this season; Jared Coreau (Lincoln Stars), Reid Ellingson (Green Bay Gamblers), Kyle Follmer (Sioux City/Lincoln), Austin Handley (Des Moines/Omaha/Lincoln), Jake Johnson (Sioux City Musketeers), Kory Kaunisto (Waterloo/Lincoln), Ryan Kesti (Sioux City Musketeers), C.J. Ludwig (Omaha Lancers), Reed Seckel (Green Bay Gamblers), Stephan Vigier (Sioux City Musketeers), Matt Thurber (Omaha Lancers), and Ryan Daugherty (Omaha Lancers).
