Austin Sevalrud Awarded 2012 RBC Junior A Scholarship

Press Release

The Alberta Junior Hockey League has selected Austin Sevalrud of the Spruce Grove Saints as the recipient of the 2012 RBC Junior A Scholarship. Sevalrud will receive $1,000 towards his post-secondary education and will be eligible for the $5,000 National RBC Junior A Scholarship.

The RBC Junior A Scholarship recipients from each of the 10 leagues within the Canadian Junior Hockey League are eligible for the National RBC Junior A Scholarship. The recipient will be announced at the 2012 RBC Royal Bank Cup in Humboldt, SK in May.

Austin Sevalrud is a 20 year-old defenceman and a three-year veteran of the AJHL. Saints General Manager and Head Coach Jason McKee strongly endorsed Sevalrud's application for the RBC Junior A Scholarship. "His commitment to success has been a trademark of his outstanding three year Junior hockey career, which has seen him named Assistant Captain of the Spruce Grove Saints," stated McKee.

"Austin Sevalrud has personified the type of player that I feel is the cornerstone of an organization, a player who leads by example, makes the most of his ability and brings the intangible qualities that every coach looks for in a leader."

Austin Sevalrud is currently enrolled in the Social Sciences program at Athabasca University. Sevalrud has committed to attend and play for the University of Alaska Anchorage for the 2012-2013 season. Upon committing to the Sea Wolves in January 2012, Sevalrud stated, "I am very excited to soon be a part of the Sea Wolves program as it is a great organization with a great coaching staff. I am grateful to have this opportunity next year as it has been a long road to get to where I am today. "

Sevalrud plans to obtain a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the University of Alaska Anchorage and continue to strive for his goal of becoming a professional hockey player. Sevalrud aims to one day become a military or commercial pilot. In addition, Sevalrud will pursue his love of music as a performing musician.

The annual scholarship provides financial assistance to players of the Canadian Junior Hockey League for their post-secondary education. Players eligible for the RBC Junior A Scholarship must be a Canadian citizen, on a Canadian Junior A team roster, and registered in or applying for full-time post-secondary studies. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievements, Junior A success, and community involvement.

The winner of the $5,000 National RBC Junior A Scholarship will be selected by a national panel of Hockey Canada appointed junior hockey representatives.
