A look inside the 2012 NAHL Robertson Cup Playoffs

It is one of the most exciting times of the year, the NAHL playoffs. 28 teams have worked all season long for their next goal… to get to the post-season. After this Sunday, that will be a reality for 20 teams. Following two rounds of playoffs, only six teams will remain for a shot at becoming NAHL Robertson Cup National Champions.

Every hockey league has a different playoff structure and the NAHL is no different. Here is a brief look at some frequently asked questions about the 2012 NAHL Playoffs and each team’s quest to become the Robertson Cup National Champion:

Q: When is the final regular season game of the 2011-12 season?
A: Sunday, April 1, 2012

Q: How many NAHL teams make the playoffs?
A: 20, the top four from each of the five divisions in the NAHL.

Q: How is seeding for the playoffs in each division determined?
A: By the number of points accumulated in the regular season.

Q: What is the tie-breaking format between two teams with the same number of points?
A: 1. Wins 2. Head-to-head record 3. Goal differential in head-to-head competition 4. Total goal differential 5. Coin Flip

Q: What is the playoff format for each playoff round and the Robertson Cup?

Q: What if the score in a playoff game is tied after regulation?
A: Playoff games in the NAHL are played to completion. There are no shootouts like in the regular season. If the game is tied after regulation, the ice shall be resurfaced. A fifteen minute intermission shall take place. Then, a twenty-minute, 5 on 5, sudden death overtime period shall be played. The game shall end upon a goal being scored and the Club scoring declared the winner. If no goal is scored, the same procedure as above shall be repeated until a winner has been determined. Clubs will change ends each overtime period.
