U20 Worlds’ schedule

ZURICH – The International Ice Hockey Federation has published the schedule for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship that will take place in Ufa, Russia, 26 December 2012 to 5 January 2013.

Host Russia will play its first game at Ufa Arena on 26 December against Slovakia at 20:00 local time while defending champion Sweden opens the event on the same evening against the Czech Republic. Latvia vs. Finland and Germany vs. Canada will be the early games on Boxing Day.

The event goes from western Canada this year to the most eastward city ever in U20 World Championship history, to Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan with one million inhabitants.

Russia, Canada, Slovakia, the United States and Germany will play at the 2007-built Ufa Arena – home of KHL club Salavat Yulayev Ufa – in Group B that was determined according to the final ranking at the recent World Juniors in Calgary and Edmonton, Canada.

Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Latvia will play in Group A at the Sports Palace that was used for the 1996 IIHF European U18 Championship.

The top three teams of each group advance to the final round while the remaining squads play a round robin to determine which team will be relegated to Division I.
