Whalers’ Trocheck OHL Player of the Week

Press Release

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Vince Trocheck of the Plymouth Whalers is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 27 after leading the league with nine points in four games including four goals and five assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.

Trocheck helped the Whalers earn three wins last week collecting three points in each victory as one of eight players on the club to record at least five points in the four-game stretch.  Last Monday he recorded three assists as part of a 7-1 win over the Erie Otters, then on Thursday night scored twice and picked up an assist as first star of an 8-2 win over the Windsor Spitfires.  He was held off the scoresheet Friday against the Sarnia Sting but the Whalers earned a point in the 5-4 shootout loss.  Trocheck and the Whalers rebounded Saturday grabbing a 6-2 win over the Sting with Trocheck earning second star honours with a pair of goals and one assist.

Trocheck, a 19-year-old from Pittsburgh, PA, is playing in his fourth career OHL season.  Recently acquired from the Saginaw Spirit, he was a third round selection of the Florida Panthers in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and won Gold with the United States at the 2013 World Junior Championship.  Trocheck is currently fifth in league scoring with 66 points in 43 games and has already tied his career-high with 29 goals.

Also considered for the award this week were Brandon Alderson of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Dominik Kubalik of the Sudbury Wolves who each scored four goals and one assist for five points in three games.  In goal, Garret Sparks of the Guelph Storm went 2-1-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 1.33 and save percentage of .957 and set a new franchise record with his sixth shutout of the season.
