Tavares Wins it Again

OHL Press Release

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward John Tavares of the Oshawa Generals is the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 6. Tavares, who claimed the award last week, scored four goals and five assists for nine points with a plus-minus rating of plus-2 in three home games. The Generals went 2-1 on the week.

Tavares began his week with a four-point night Thursday when the Generals hosted their East Division rivals the Belleville Bulls. The one goal and three assist effort was good for first star of the game honours in the 5-2 Generals win. The four-point night was the first for Tavares since their season opener September 19 in Sudbury. The Generals would fall to the Plymouth Whalers on Friday night 4-2 with Tavares picking up one goal and one assist and was named second star of the game. Tavares finished his week as first star of the game with two goals and one assist on Sunday leading the Generals to a 4-3 victory over the Sudbury Wolves. Tavares opened the scoring midway through the first period and would score his league-leading fifth shorthanded goal early in the third period before setting up Calvin de Haan for the game-winning goal on the power play.

Tavares, an 18-year-old from Oakville, ON is in his fourth OHL season with the Generals. His 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points in 31 games have him second in league scoring. The Generals currently have a record of 15-12-0-4 for 34 points and sit second place in the East Division behind Belleville. Tavares is eligible for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and was recently ranked the top OHL skater by NHL Central Scouting in their preliminary draft rankings. Later this week Tavares will be attending the selection camp for Team Canada’s National Junior Team in Ottawa, ON.

Also considered for the award this week was Guelph Storm goaltender Thomas McCollum. McCollum had a 30 save shutout and was first star of the game Friday night in a 3-0 home win over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. Last week McCollum was named to the roster for Team USA that will compete at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships. Matt Hackett also had a strong week between the pipes for the Plymouth Whalers winning all three of his starts and posting a 1.67 goals-against-average and a .936 save percentage. Mike Lomas of the Owen Sound Attack scored six goals in three games and was the first star when he scored his first OHL career hat-trick in a 5-2 win over the Barrie Colts on Wednesday.
