Wildcats claim second President Cup title

Press Releas

MONCTON, Monday, May 10, 2010 – Kelsey Tessier and Scott Brannon each collected two goals and an assist to help the Wildcats capture the franchise’s second President Cup title following an impressive 7-4 win over the Sea Dogs in front of a packed house at Moncton Coliseum.

Offence was certainly on display in the opening frame. It took only one minute for the Sea Dogs to silence the sold-out crowd as Stephen MacAulay let a shot go from the blue-line that beat Moncton Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel between the legs.

Moncton tied the score at one with just over six minutes remaining in the period. Then, Captain Scott Brannon helped the Wildcats retreat to the dressing room with a one-goal lead thanks to a hard wrist-shot that caught Marco Cousineau by surprise.

The floodgates opened in the early parts of the second period as Marek Hrivik and Kelsey Tessier recorded markers in a span of 50 seconds to give the home team a 4-1 lead. The Sea Dogs then took a flurry of penalties which enabled Tessier to score his second goal of the game on the power-play before the mid-way mark of the second frame. Hrivik recorded his second one of the night to put the game out of reach.

The Sea Dogs showed why they finished atop the overall standings during the regular season, scoring three unanswered goals courtesy of Michael Kirkpatrick (2) and Yann Sauvé, but it was too little too late.

Gabriel Bourque was awarded the Guy-Lafleur Trophy as the playoffs MVP after registering 29 points, including 19 goals. QMJHL Vice-President of Hockey Operations Marcel Patenaude presented the trophy to Bourque (crédit photo – Dan St-Louis).

The Wildcats leave for Brandon (Manitoba) on Wednesday where they will represent the QMJHL at the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup,
