GIANTS' GALLAGHER WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Giants forward Brendan Gallagher is the WHL Player of the Week.

On Saturday, January 7, the Portland Winterhawks were in Vancouver to face the Giants. Gallagher collected seven points in the contest, scoring his third hat-trick of the season (fifth of his career) and adding four assists in the Giants 8-4 win over the win over the ‘Hawks. He was also named the games 1st Star. Gallagher’s triumphant return to the Giants comes on the heels of a gritty effort at the 2012 World Junior Championship where he helped Canada to a Bronze Medal finish.

After missing several games while competing for Canada, Gallagher still ranks 14th among all WHL scorers with 53 points (27 goals, 26 assists) in 29 games played. The Vancouver Giants have won five of their last seven games and currently sit 4th in the WHL Western Conference with a 25-14-1-1 record for 52 points.

A 19-year-old from Delta, BC, Gallagher is in his fourth full season with the Vancouver Giants who selected the winger in the ninth round of the 2007 WHL Draft. He was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th round of the 2010 NHL Draft and after a tremendous 2011 NHL Training Camp signed an entry level contract with the Habs.

The WHL has also nominated Ty Rimmer of the Tri-City Americans for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Rimmer posted back-to-back shut-outs this week, stopping all 64 shots faced in a 5-0 win over Moose Jaw on January 4 and 4-0 win over Everett on January 7.
