MHL Announces 2011-2012 Scholastic Player of the Year, CJHL RBC Player of the Year Nominee

Press Release

The Maritime Junior Hockey League and Premier sponsor Kent released the recipient of the 2011-2012 Scholastic Player of the Year (RBC Scholarship) on Wednesday as well as its nominee for the 2012 RBC National Junior A Player of the Year Award.

The recipient of the RBC Scholarship is forward Alex Dalley of the Truro Bearcats. Dalley, a 19 year-old native of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, was the stand out amongst players nominated. This program is designed to provide an opportunity for Junior A players to apply for a scholarship based on their academic accomplishments and community service.

According to GM and Head Coach Shawn Evans, Dalley is a perfect fit for the honour. “The Bearcats organization is very pleased for Alex to be recognized with the RBC Scholarship”, expressed Evans. “Alex joined our team two years ago having graduated with honours out of high school. He’s been an excellent student at the Nova Scotia Agriculture College the last two years and an excellent Ambassador for the MHL as a student and athlete”.

“Sometimes we are all consumed with winning and Alex is a great example of what the MHL is all about”, added Evans. “This league gives young men a chance to continue their hockey careers and continue with their studies as they prepare for life after Hockey. Alex is a role model for all players and we are proud to have him as part of our Organization”.

The MHL nominee for the National Award is Tim Campbell of the Woodsotck Slammers. The CJHL Player of the Year is selected by Life Members of Hockey Canada from nominations submitted by each of the 10 CJHL member leagues. It is awarded based on the player’s hockey playing ability, combined with academic achievement and off-ice community involvement.

“Tim has demonstrated his skill set as a defenseman in our league time after time and his stats of 17 goals and 55 assists support this”, said Slammers Head Coach Jason Tatarnic. “Tim plays in all situations including a major defensive role for us, he plays against the opposition's best players and with Tim on the backend our hockey team only averaged 2.3 goals against this season. Tim has been leader on and off the ice for us and we have been very fortunate to have him in Woodstock this season”

“The Maritime Junior Hockey League is proud of the accomplishments of both of these fine young players”, said John Lynn, Chairman of the MHL Board of Governors. “Both Alex and Tim are glowing examples of the type of players the MHL has worked so hard to produce. Well-rounded individuals with equal focus on their skills and education, topped off with above average participation within their communities”.
