The following season he moved closer to home, joining the nearby Hamilton Red Wings, where he instantly became one of the club's leaders and hardest-working players, finishing third in scoring with 44 points in 49 games played.

The Red Wings' alternate captain would again improve upon his totals last season, once again finishing third in scoring on the club with 36 goals, the eighth best total in the league, and 66 points. Entering this season, Powers was named the club's captain and started the season on fire, recording 14 goals and 28 points in just 21 games before he was traded to the Stouffville Spirit. Now playing with one of the most explosive offences in the league, Powers would continue his high-scoring ways, finishing the year with 25 goals and 61 points, while also notching seven game-winners.
