NORMINTON TO BE HONOURED

Press Release

Brandon, MB. – The Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with Atom-Jet Group have announced the winner of January’s Innovator of the Month Award.

Local swimmer Jason Norminton will be recognized Friday night during the first intermission of the Western Hockey League game between the Wheat Kings and visiting Prince Albert Raiders.

A volunteer dressing room assistant with the WHL club, Jason recently swam for Team Canada at the 6th International and World Competition, convened by the Down Syndrome Swim Organization in Loano, Italy.

Twenty-one nations participated, with more than 200 swimmers including Jason taking part in the competition. The Brandon swimming star came home with a collection of medals and personal bests including a bronze for being part of the Canadian men’s relay team. As well, he finished 9th in the 50m backstroke and in the top fourteen in the 100m and 200m backstroke as well as the 200m Individual Medley.

In the preliminaries meanwhile, Jason captured silver medals for the 50m Fly and the 200m Individual Medley, bronze for the 50m backstroke and a gold in the 100m backstroke and the 4x50 Medley relay.

Jason is a member of both the Brandon Special Olympics team and the Brandon Bluefins Swim Club and hopes to return to the DSISO World Competition that takes place in Mexico in November, 2014.

DSISO provides the opportunity to swim at a world class level through its World Championship. While in Italy last November, athletes and their families had the chance to meet others from around the world, make new friends and learn something about a new culture.

“Through the swimming he has learned so much,” says Jason’s parents Jody and Heide recently told the Brandon Sun. “He has gained self confidence and made wonderful friends.”

As for Friday night’s game, the Wheat Kings will be looking to extend their modest win streak to three games. Brandon is coming off back to back victories last weekend against Moose Jaw and Regina.

Tickets to the game, which is a presentation of Enns Brothers and John Deere, are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
