Press Release

CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, announced Tuesday a new internship program aimed at alumni of the Canadian Hockey League, National Women’s Team Programs, and National Men’s Team Programs who are pursuing careers in sports administration, communications, marketing or development.

The Ed Chynoweth Internship Program is named in honour of the late Canadian Hockey League and Program of Excellence founding member. Internships will be awarded annually to up to five outstanding college or university students who have completed or are working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree in a sports-related field.

Successful applicants of the Ed Chynoweth Internship program will be spend up to eight months working in their chosen field in one of the three CHL offices across the country, or with Hockey Canada in either the Calgary or Ottawa office. Internship award winners will receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses.

In both their professional and personal lives, interested applicants should represent the high standards and ideals characterized by Chynoweth throughout his life, including determination, enthusiasm and integrity. A committee comprised of representatives from Hockey Canada, the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, will choose recipients of the Ed Chynoweth Internship. Up to four applicants annually will be CHL alumni, while one will be an alumnus of Canada’s National Women’s’ Team programs.

Ed Chynoweth became the Western Hockey League’s first fulltime president in 1972 and was a long-time president of the Canadian Hockey League from 1975 to 1995. He captured two WHL championships and one Memorial Cup as president and governor of the Kootenay Ice and is considered to be one of the most influential individuals in Canadian junior hockey. Ed passed away in April of 2008 at the age of 66.

“Hockey Canada is privileged to honor Ed Chynoweth. Ed would be delighted to see an award in his name dedicated to the advancement of the careers of CHL and Hockey Canada alumni who are focused on a career in sport administration,” said Paul Carson, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey development. “Ed Chynoweth was a true reflection of all the positive qualities one needs to succeed in the sports industry.”

The Ed Chynoweth Internship Awards are made possible through a generous contribution from the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund, which provides grants for grassroots sports organizations and registered Canadian amateur athletic associations across the country. Former Calgary Flames owner Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman dedicated his life to providing opportunities for youth to participate in sports such as hockey. The Calgary Foundation promotes and facilitates philanthropyby making powerful connections between donors and community organizations.

“Doc Seaman not only had a passion for giving back to his community, he was also passionate about hockey and sports,” said Eva Friesen, president and CEO of The Calgary Foundation. “This grant to Hockey Canada in support of their internship program is a strong reflection of Doc’s love for the hockey community and Calgary at large.”
