North Stars' Matt Kaarela named Pizza Hut player of the week

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Thunder Bay North Stars forward Matt Kaarela has been named Pizza Hut player of the week for the period running Jan. 9-15.

In two games this past week the 19-year-old Thunder Bay native picked up five points helping the North Stars secure a pair of victories.

Kaarela began by scoring once and dishing out three assists in a 7-0 triumph over Sioux Lookout this past Wednesday and followed that up by notching the game-winning goal in overtime Saturday as the North Stars edged Duluth 5-4.

On the season he leads his club in offensive production with 41 points on 20 tallies and 21 helpers with his overall totals putting him into a tie for 10th in SIJHL scoring.

To recognize his on-ice efforts, Kaarela will be presented with a gift card courtesy of Pizza Hut.

Honourable mention for the Pizza Hut player of the week award went to Nick Drill, (F) Wisconsin Wilderness; Bryce Maggrah, (F) Dryden Ice Dogs; Byron Katapaytuk, (F) Fort Frances Lakers; Hunter Scott, (F) Duluth Clydesdales; Chris Hoffman, (F) Sioux Lookout Flyers and Shamus O’Neill (F) Iron Range Iron Heads.

At the conclusion of the 2011-12 regular season the top performer in the SIJHL will earn the Pizza Hut player of the year award.
