Press Release
Game one of the 2012 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge presented by
Huff Estates in memory of Peter Huff is in the books and saw the OJHL
South Division All-Stars down the East Division All-Stars 2-1 in a
shootout.
The first period saw the two OJHL squads trade goals. Corey Kalk of
the North York Rangers opened the scoring just a minute forty-eight into
the period and Justin Danforth of the Cobourg Cougars would knot the
game at one.
Period two would see the two goaltenders shine, stopping everything
they faced to send the game to a shootout. Joseph Pianta of the Toronto
Lakeshore Patriots turned aside 14 shots and 22 overall, while Nathan
Perry of the Cobourg Cougars would stop 16 shots and 30 in the game.
With an extra point on the line, the two teams went to a shootout.
John Carpino (North York) and Matt Buckles (St. Michael’s) were both
stopped by Perry, while Connor Armour (Cobourg) and Mike Soucier
(Wellington) were both stopped by Pianta. Daniel Tedesco of the
Patriots would open the shootout scoring and Graham Yeo of the Kingston
Voyageurs would match him at the other end. Liam Kerins of the North
York Rangers, ala Peter Forsberg in the Olympics, tried the one-handed
reach around on Perry, which was initially waved off by the official as
the netminder bumped the net off his pegs. After some deliberation with
the other officials, the appropriate call was made and the goal
counted, standing up as the game-winner when Pianta turned aside
Cobourg’s Justin Danforth for the victory and extra point in the
standings.
Players of the Game were Nathan Perry (Cobourg) for the East and Corey Kalk (North York) for the South.
