The USHL suspends Tropp

The USHL has suspended Sioux Falls Stampede forward Corey Tropp for atleast two games for his role in the Steve Kampfer attack last week.

"We are as concerned as everyone in the hockey community that the on-ice actions of Mr. Tropp be recognized as fundamentally unacceptable to the game of hockey at any level," said Commissioner Skip Prince.

He left Michigan State earlier this week when the school suspended him for the rest of the season and returned to Sioux Falls where he spent two seasons.

In his first public comments since the incident Tropp said it was out of character for him.

I’ve been definitely thinking about it a lot. The action I took was out of character for me. It’s one of those things that was heat of the moment, it wasn’t premeditated or anything like that. But I think the roughest thing has been all of the media attention it’s got. It’s kind of gone a little overboard.

I like the fact that the USHL isn't going to let him off the hook. As I mentioned Monday over at The Program, Conboy and Tropp shouldn't run to a junior league and continue to play.

Over at MGoBlog they want the players to be kicked off the team. I say they are suspended for the rest of the year and hopefully they don't leave school. It would be an actual punishment and instead of letting them go and sign a pro contract. We will find out this week when the CCHA comes out with their decision later this week.

He could be suspended longer but the USHL is investigating the incident.

We believe it is only fair to meet with Mr. Tropp as well. Given the timing of this matter, that hearing will not occur until after this weekend's USHL schedule has been completed. The determination as to what further sanctions, if any, are appropriate will be concluded prior to the re-commencement of the USHL season after our All-Star break."

Prince further noted, "We note that this is a case of first impression for the USHL – that is, we've not had to address the question of a player joining our league following a suspension at the NCAA level. There is nothing in our rules or regulations regarding the matter, so was both well within the rights of the Sioux Falls Stampede, and appropriate, for them to add Mr. Tropp to their roster pending the League's decision as to appropriate suspension. We're all trying to do the right thing here."

Here's the video of the incident.

Tri-City signs Moline

Press Release

Kennewick, WA - Tri-City Americans Governor/General Manager Bob Tory announced today that the team has signed 15-year-old forward Max Moline to a standard WHL Players Contract. Moline was selected by Tri-City in the fifth round (110th overall) in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.

With the addition of Moline, the Americans have now signed their top three draft picks from the 2008 Draft.

A product of Lethbridge, AB, Moline attended the Americans' rookie camp earlier this season. After collecting a goal for Team White in the Todd Klassen Classic and a solid performance during camp, Moline earned an invite to Tri-City's main camp. Currently, the 6'3, 170 pound center is playing for the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Southern Alberta Midget Hockey League. In 15 games for the Hurricanes this season, Moline has collected eight goals and 21 points.

"Max has had a very good season this year. We were impressed with his training camp in August and he has continued to improve all season," Tory explained. "We are excited to have Max join our organization and to compete for a spot on our roster next season."

Honorary Captains Named

Press Release

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Windsor Spitfires Hockey Club announced today that former Detroit Red Wings captain and current team Vice-President Steve Yzerman, with former Windsor Spitfires and New York Rangers star Adam Graves, will serve as honourary captains for the 2009 Subway OHL All-Star Classic.

The two will be present at ice level for the pre-game ceremonies on Wednesday February 4, 2009 at the WFCU Centre beginning at 7:00pm. Yzerman will be representing the Eastern Conference All-Stars, with Graves aligning with the home team Western Conference.

“The Windsor Spitfires are extremely proud to welcome Steve Yzerman and Adam Graves as honourary captains for the 2009 Subway OHL All-Star Classic” said Spitfires Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel. “Both gentlemen are very well known and respected throughout the Windsor community and it will be exciting for our organization and for our fans to see them on the ice for the ceremonies of this event” added Rychel.

Steve Yzerman played two seasons in the OHL with the Peterborough Petes from 1981-1983 before being drafted in the first round, fourth overall to the Detroit Red Wings in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Yzerman played in 1,514 games over 22 seasons in the NHL with the Red Wings where he won three Stanley Cups. He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs in 1998. He ranks sixth on the NHL all-time points list with 1,755 career points including 692 goals (eighth all-time) and 1,063 assists (seventh all-time). Yzerman is the longest serving captain in NHL history wearing the “C” for the Red Wings for 20 seasons beginning in 1986-87 as a 21-year-old. On January 2, 2007, the Red Wings retired Yzerman’s number 19 to the rafters at Joe Louis Arena. Yzerman is currently the Vice-President of the Red Wings Hockey Club and General Manager of Team Canada’s 2010 Olympic Men’s Hockey Team.

“I am very pleased to be participating in the OHL All-Star Classic and am excited for the opportunity to be an honourary captain for this event” said Detroit Red Wings Vice-President Steve Yzerman. “This is a great game for the players and they should all be extremely proud of their achievements so far this season and I look forward to sharing the night with them” added Yzerman.

Adam Graves is an OHL alumni having played three seasons with the Windsor Spitfires from 1985-1988 and was a member of the Spitfires team that won an OHL Championship in 1987-88. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft in the first round, 22nd overall. Graves, known as a power forward with goal scoring ability, played 15 seasons in the NHL beginning his career with the Red Wings before playing two years in Edmonton where he won his first Stanley Cup in 1990 with the Oilers. He played 10 seasons with the New York Rangers which included his best season in 1993-94 where his 52 goals and 27 assists for 79 points helped the Rangers win a Stanley Cup Championship. That year he was a second team NHL All-Star and was the recipient of the King Clancy Trophy for his charitable work. Graves retired in 2004 after two seasons in San Jose with the Sharks. His number nine jersey has been retired by the Spitfires and will also be retired by the Rangers on Tuesday February 3, 2009.

“Windsor is a great hockey town and has always treated me really well and I look forward to coming back for the All-Star Game festivities” said former Windsor Spitfires star Adam Graves. “I have so many great memories of the old Windsor Arena but it will be exciting to see the new rink, especially hosting such a great event” commented Graves.

The 2009 Subway OHL All-Star Classic features a skills competition and alumni game on Tuesday February 3, 2009 beginning at 7:00pm with the game taking place on Wednesday February 4, 2009 also at 7:00pm at the WFCU Centre in Windsor. The game will be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet Ontario and can also be seen online through INSINC or heard on the FAN 590 at www.fan590.com.

Beach Suspended

Kyle Beach is in the news again as he got a three game suspension. On Saturday night, he shot the puck into the stands. Over at the Red Deer Scene, Andrew Walker believes Beach was trying to bang it off the glass.

Upon watching the video replay, I'll admit, it was pretty evident that Beach ducked his head in anxiety as he the puck cleared the glass, so I AM pretty convinced he didn't mean to fire it into the crowd, but rather smack it off the glass.

I don't know about this. If there was no real intent, then why the suspension? People have different angles when viewing something. Could previous history be playing in the role in this?

There seems to be no video on this incident.

I wander how much the Chicago Blackhawks will put up with all his incidents? They don't have to sign him but wouldn't that be a publicity nightmare not signing a first round pick. They could trade his rights but will another team give him a second chance?

How about the Lethbridge Hurricanes who traded for him a few weeks back? He has nine goals and five assists in 9 games since the trade. They are seventh in the Eastern Conference and trying to battle out for a playoff position. These three games are huge for them and not having him in the line up isn't a good thing.

Chilliwack fires GM

Press Release

The Chilliwack Bruins announced today that General Manager Darrell May has been relieved of his duties effective immediately. The moves comes with the Bruins in ninth place in the Western Conference with a record of 14-31-2-4, six points out of a playoff spot.

“Chilliwack fans have been incredibly supportive of us through these first few years”, stated Bruins President Darryl Porter. “This has been a trying year for our fans who despite our won loss record have remained incredibly dedicated. This season has not unfolded the way ownership feels it should have and we felt it was best to make a change at this time. We would like to thank Darrell for his hard work and dedication to the Bruins for the last four years.”

Darryl Porter will serve as interim General Manager until a replacement is named.

Salters gets 5 games

London Knights enforcer Leigh Salters was suspended five games for his actions on Sunday against former London Knights' forward Akim Aliu. Here's the evidence.

I think that was a fair suspension because it seemed Aliu didn't want no part of Salters. After looking at the video, I wasn't surprises he didn't get more. These types attacks need to be out of the game. Some say that it's David Branch ruining "the sport" with what happened to Don Sanderson earlier this year.

This wasn't your normal scrap, Salters went after Aliu and kept punching when both men were on the ground.

In the London Free Press, on the video it appears Aliu spitted on Salters.

The Knights coaches looked at the videotape after yesterday's game, suspecting Aliu may have spit on Salters. "I have no comment on that," said Knights assistant Pat Curcio.

If this is true, I don't mind Salters dropping the mitts with Aliu but that doesn't mean to attack from behind.

"We have a history -- that's all I'll say," Salters said. "It goes back to the playoff series last year (when his Guelph Storm beat Aliu's Knights in five games)."

The London Knights had no problem tonight as they defeated the Kitchener Rangers 9-0 with John Tavares getting four goals and adding two assists. 61 is your lucky number tonight. The last person who dawned the number 61 for the Knights, Rick Nash, had a hat trick in the 3-2 victory over Detroit.

Jordan Weal and Brett Connolly played in the 2008 All Star Game and each played a key role on the Silver Medal winning Team Pacific at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.

“The program is absolutely fantastic. I know its implementation will take some time, but the principles behind the program are dead on.”

Brian Burke, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the general manager for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team.

“This effort is one of the best things to happen in USA Hockey in the last 25 years. While it will be a change of approach in some respects, it’s what is best for kids and that’s what we should keep in mind.”

Mike Mullally, affiliate president of the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois

"It clearly addresses every segment of the game and more specifically, fully addresses enhancing the fun and development for our youth athletes participating in hockey. From 6 to 17, the strategy is right on."

Grimaldi to the Giants?

Rocco Grimaldi who's playing with the Little Ceasars Major Midget team has apparently has been added to the Vancouver Giants protected list. This is according to The Scouting News:

Sources are speculating about 1993 DOB American hotshot prospect Rocco Grimaldi’s potential CHL hockey future. Will Grimaldi end up with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants? Or, will he be admitted into the class of 2009 OHL draft in May? It appears some decisions have been made!

He's one of the Top Americans for his group. This season he has 15 goals and 23 assists in 29 games. Most thought he would be eligible for the OHL Draft this May. One thing I don't understand is how come he was eligible for rights to be picked up. He went undrafted in the WHL Bantam Draft. I would of thought he would at least be drafted if he was available. Also wouldn't he be available for this upcoming Bantam Draft because he went undrafted last year?

Western College Hockey saw him over the summer at the Select 15's.

Rocco Grimaldi- By far the most exciting player at the camp. He's little, but is a great skater and has incredible tenacity. Aside from being very skilled offensively, he was probably the best defensive forward at the camp. I think he has the potential to be a very special player.

If the Scouting News report is true it's another big win for the WHL. Earlier this season, the Seattle Thunderbirds signed Texas native Colin Jacobs. The Kelowna Rockets signed California native Shane McColgan who already played four games and has a goal and two assists. (15 year-olds are allowed to play five games).

The 93 class looks weak all around. USA Hockey can't be losing anymore of the top talent because the pool is looking pretty thin.

The structure of our hockey system in the United States is one that has just evolved over time. This structure was not planned, and through this evolutionary process certain counterproductive elements have crept into our system.

Where Are We Going
Current research on long-term athlete development has brought to light critical areas that our system is neglecting at a very early age. As children mature they each progress through the same developmental stages and certain aspects of these stages must be addressed at the appropriate points along the developmental curve in order to reach their genetic potential. Without developing skills and certain physical and mental attributes during the windows of optimal trainability, the long-term prospects of becoming a truly elite player are diminished.

Long-term athlete development (LTAD) is a framework for athlete development in sport that can be used as a basis on which to ‘re-align,’ or make more consistent, our existing systems and structures. It has been developed by Istvan Balyi, an internationally recognized coach educator, and is based upon a consensus of evidenced research about how young people develop their maximum sporting ability, linking more closely the coaching and development of players to their physical and psychological growth.

It should be recognized that the LTAD principles are not new. The majority of research on which the principles are based is widely accepted, and has been used to underpin physical education teaching for many years. The LTAD principles bring a mechanism for applying the theory to better integrate our whole hockey development system (i.e. coaching, training, playing, competition, etc.). It is also important that we understand that the LTAD principles have been developed and implemented by over 100 sports and federations around the world.

USA Hockey is introducing the American Development Model, a structure that includes a high performance club component that is an extension of USA Hockey’s highly successful National Team Development Program. The American Development Model is based on current sports science and LTAD principles.

American Development Model
• Model youth club structure and materials available to all USAH clubs
• Integrates training, competition and recovery programming with relation to biological development and maturation (as opposed to current chronological age)
• Offers equal opportunity for recreation and competition
• Is participant/athlete centered, coach driven, and parents, officials, administration, sport medicine & sport science supported

High Performance Club Program
• Approximately 36 High Performance Clubs (HPCs) located in six regional divisions of approximately six HPC organizations.
• HPCs will field High Performance teams at 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U, and 18U to compete in a National HPC League.
• Each HPC is required to have a supporting 12U, 10U and 8U program in place that follows the American Development Model.
• Physical testing and monitoring of the HPC players will be done to provide information to the National Team Development Program, United States Hockey League and NHL for future player selection.
• ADM Managers will help with coaching education, administration, player tracking and implementation of the American Development Model within each of the HPCs.
• A regional off-season training program will be implemented to provide additional training time to HPC players and coaches.

MacQueen's 400th win

Press Release

Sault Ste. Marie, ON - Dave MacQueen led his team into Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday in search of his 400th career OHL coaching victory.

The 400-mark is a large milestone in the OHL coaching ranks as only 9 coaches previous to MacQueen have reached that mark.

Number 400 would not be easy to come by as the Greyhounds put up a good fight in this one actually leading for most of the game.

However the Sting would get a late second period goal and put together a strong third period winning the game 4-2.

It would take the Sting 39 minutues before they would even get on the board when Steven Reese scored a huge short handed goal in the dying seconds of the second period.

Jamie Arniel, Ben O'Quinn and Matt Martin would all score third period goals for the Sting.

For Arniel it extended his goal scoring streak to a league high 10-games.

Dan Spence made 19 saves in the Sting net for the win.

The entire Sarnia Sting organization congratulates Coach MacQueen on reaching the 400-win milestone.

Beach at it again

Kyle Beach is in the news again. He been subject of controversy throughout his junior career.

This happened Wednesday night in the 7-5 victory for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

This is one of the most unsportsmanlike things I have seen in a while. You don't need to show off on an open net goal. He had no defenseman there to get around. There's no style points in a goal. To take a Don Cherry phrase "Act like you've been there before."

I have no problem for the Medicine Hat Tigers going after him. They wanted to knock some sense into the kid. I look at this incident like the Terrell Owens incident when he stood on the "Star" when the 49er's played the Cowboys. It's disrespectful.

How about the color commentator with his homerism. He went past Jack Edwards' homerism (NESN's play by play announcer for the Boston Bruins). Yes throwing the stick is a penalty but after that it was all homerism.

I do have to say Matt McCue (27 Tigers) did go to far by fighting someone who wanted no part. Where were the Hurricanes coaches to make sure no one came off the bench? That's bad coaching. I know Dwight King (who was named the 1st star with 2 goals.) wanted to help his teammates but you should know not to leave the bench.

Andy Kemper had an interesting take on the situation. Regan Bartel also has some comments on the brawl.

The WHL handed down suspensions yesterday.

That's My Take

AMHL Player of the Month

Press Release

The Source for Sports Players of the Month for December are:

Forward Mark Reners of the Lethbridge Y’s Men Titans (Chrysler Division).
In the month of December Marklead the Titans offensively to a 3-1-2 record averaging 2 points a game with 10 goals and 2 assists and 2 penalty minutes in 6 games. Mark also played 2 more games in the month when he got the call up from the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL. Mark has sacrificed plenty to play Midget AAA in Lethbridge, living away from his parents and his home in Pincher Creek.

Forward Tyson Beaupre of the Grande Prairie Storm (Dodge Division)
Tyson has become a real leader for the Storm, in December the team has had a record of 3-1-1, in which Tyson had 6 goals and 3 assists. He had a slow start after being injured in tryout’s having his finger almost cut off by a skate, this injury did affect his start to the season going the first set of games without a goal. Since late into November he has really progressed becoming the team scoring leader. Tyson plays the game the way it should be played showing his teammates respect as well as respect for the other team and officials.
Both players received a Hundred (100) dollar gift certificate from the Source for Sports Dealers of Alberta, a Timex Watch imprinted with the AMHL logo and a commemorative plaque from the Alberta ‘AAA’ Midget Hockey League. Tri-City signs Holland

Press Release

KENNEWICK, WA – Tri-City Americans Governor/General Manager Bob Tory announced today that the team has signed 16-year-old forward Patrick Holland to a standard WHL Players Contract. Holland was selected by Tri-City in the sixth round (125th overall) in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft.
The Lethbridge, AB-native attended the Americans’ rookie camp this season. After a solid performance, including a goal for Team Blue in the Todd Klassen Classic, Holland earned an invite to Tri-City’s main camp. Currently, the 6’0, 175 pound forward is playing for the Lethbridge Y’s Men Titans of the Alberta Midget Hockey League. Holland, who was recently named to the Chrysler Division All-Star roster, has totaled 15 goals and 41 points in 30 games for the Titans and sits just outside the top-5 in AMHL scoring. This past December, Holland also helped the Titans to a berth in the semi-finals of the prestigious Mac’s Tournament in Calgary, collecting five goals and eight points in six games.

“Patrick is a skilled forward who excelled at our rookie camp,” stated Tory. “He is a tremendous skater with good vision and puck skills. He will be a welcome addition to our line-up next season.”

The Americans return to the ice this weekend, as they welcome the Everett Silvertips to the Toyota Center tonight, Friday, January 23. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tri-City will then head up north to take on the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday before returning to Kennewick on Sunday, January 25 in a re-match with the Silvertips. Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets, including the Toyota Center box office, all Fred Meyer outlets, or online at ticketmaster.com.

My Top 30

With mid term rankings coming out, it's time for my top 30.

1.

After his World Junior performance, he has regained the number one spot many eyes. I still believe it's up to the organization's needs.

2.

People were expecting more from Hedman at the World Juniors. He can be both a defensive and an offensive defenseman.

3.

After Hedman, Cowen is the best defenseman available in this draft. He's known for his defensive play.

4. Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson

Timrå J20 SuperElit 1 0 0 0 0
Timrå Elitserien 36 4 7 11 4
Team Sweden U18 (all) International 4 3 6 9 2
Team Sweden U20 WJC-20 6 2 5 7 6
Team Sweden U20 (all) International 5 1 4 5 4

He looks like one of the best forwards to come out of Sweden in a while. He averaged over a point a game at the World Juniors but he couldn't finish on some of his changes.

5.

I wouldn't say he came out of no where in Ottawa but he surely helped himself. He replaced Dana Tyrell on the roster. He's having a great year in the WHL.

6.

He's having a great freshman year at the University of Minnesota. Schroeder is a playmaker and has a decent shot.

7.

He was one of the younger players on Canada's Under 18 team last season. He knows how to put the puck into the net. He's higher on other lists but I don't consider him falling.

8.

He was having a great year before he suffered a jaw injury. His stock could go up with Tavares on the team.

9.

Schenn is having another big year after he had 71 points as a 16 year old. He's not afraid to get physical either.

10.

Some questioned if he should of been on the World Junior roster. He answered his critics as the powerplay specialists.

11.

He's one of my favorite players in this draft. He has flourished with the Voltigeurs. He will be one of the first two QMJHL defenseman taking.

12. Jeremy Morin

26 games 16 goals 6 assists 22 points 76 penalty minutes

He's one of pure snipers of this draft. He's uncommitted but don't be surprised if he's wearing a Kitchener Rangers jersey next year.

13. Jacob Josefson

Djurgården J20 SuperElit 2 0 0 0 4
Djurgården Elitserien 36 4 3 7 8
Team Sweden U18 (all) International 4 3 2 5 4
Team Sweden U20 WJC-20 6 0 0 0 2
Team Sweden U20 (all) International 7 1 6 7 0

Another high profiled Swedish player. He looks to be a playmaker. His coming out party could come at the Under 18's.

14.

He's another defensive defenseman. He won't stick out at you but won't don't do anything to hurt the team.

15.

Another of my favorite players in this draft. Despite what happened at the Top Prospects game, it shouldn't hurt him. Just think of him as Milan Lucic 2.0.

16.

I still consider him the best goalie in this draft. If a team needs a goalie, they can't pass up an athletic goalie like Roy.

17.

Remember LeBlanc's name because he will rise. He was one of Canada's best players at the Ivan Hlinka this past summer. He's committed to Havard.

18.

De Haan has come out of no where. A defenseman for the Oshawa Generals that looks to be a two way defender.

19.

The USHL's best defenseman this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes higher. Next year he will be at Colorado College.

20.

Glennie is a linemate of Brayden Schenn. The duo is one of the best young 1-2 punch in the CHL.

21. Mike Lee 28 games 14-12-1 2.63 goals against average .910 save percentage

The best American goalie in the draft. He playing on the expansion Fargo Force and has been stellar. Next year will be at St. cloud State

22. Drew Shore

31 games 8 goals 12 assists 20 points 24 penalty minutes

He could be the third American player to go but I believe his skating will hold him back. He will head to Denver to join the Pioneers in 2009.

23.

He was hyped up to go in the top five in the draft. He had a decent rookie year. This year he's showing his talent.

24.

Holland looks like he will be a two way center at the next level. He has risen and at the beginning of the year he was outside the first round.

25.

Pasquale could be arguably the best goaltender for 2009 draft in the entire CHL. He has been solid since being traded to Saginaw.

26. David Rundblad

Skellefteå AIK J20 SuperElit 7 7 5 12 2
Skellefteå AIK Elitserien 33 0 6 6 8
Team Sweden U20 WJC-20 6 1 1 2 0
Team Sweden U20 (all) International 9 3 1 4 8

This is probably Sweden's best draft crop in ages. Runblad looks like a two way defenseman down the road.

27. Richard Panik

HC Trinec Czech 7 1 0 1 4
HC Trinec U20 Czech U20 - - - - -
Slovakia U20 WJC-20 7 2 3 5 4
HC Havirov Czech2 2 0 1 1

Panik didn't have the showing most expected at the World Juniors. He looked good against the Americans in the quarter-finals.

28. Kyle Palmieri

19 games 9 goals 11 assists 20 points 31 penalty minutes

He was highly touted but has missed some games this season. He looks to be a power forward. He's set to join Notre Dame.

29. Chris Kreider

13 games 19 goals 9 assists

He plays at Andover Academy and is probably the most intriguing player in the draft. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays for Team USA at the Under 18's. Committed to Boston College for 2010.

30.

Gelinas has had a solid sophomore campaign. He has taking the role as one of Lewiston's top defenseman this season.

That's My Take
