OHL Academic Players for November

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for November, 2012, which includes Sam Studnicka of the Windsor Spitfires, Chris Bigras of the Owen Sound Attack, Damian Bourne of the Mississauga Steelheads, and Stephen Pierog of the Peterborough Petes.

West Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the West Division is Sam Studnicka of the Windsor Spitfires.  Sam currently attends St. Anne High School where he is taking Grade 12 English, Physics, and Biology.  Sam maintains an A average in all of his subjects and is considered a class leader and student mentor.  He is well liked by his teachers and peers because of his respectful behaviour and positive attitude.  The 17-year-old from Tecumseh, ON, also scored his first career OHL goal this past month on November 17 against the Barrie Colts.

Midwest Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the Midwest Division is Chris Bigras of the Owen Sound Attack.  Bigras, a 17-year-old native of Elmvale, ON, was a second round selection in 2011 and is a very hardworking individual who maintains an A+ average at school.  His teachers describe him as personable, likeable, responsible and dedicated.  He balances the demands of school and hockey with ease and is a role model for all students, not just those who play in the OHL.  Ranked tenth among OHL skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2013 NHL Draft, Bigras also won this award as a rookie last October.

Central Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the Central Division is Damian Bourne of the Mississauga SteelheadsBourne, a 16-year-old native of Oakville, ON, was the Steelheads’ first round selection in the 2012 Priority Selection after winning an OHL Cup Championship with the Mississauga Rebels.  He attends Philip Pocock Secondary where he is described as an excellent student with a great attitude who is fast tracking Grade 12 courses while so heavily involved in hockey.

East Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the East Division is Stephen Pierog of the Peterborough Petes.  Stephen, an 18-year-old native of Guelph, ON, has had a solid start to the 2012-13 year both on and off the ice.  He is obtaining a solid B average and is successfully juggling his hockey schedule with his academics.  He has good communication skills and is an active member in class discussions.  His teachers were quoted in saying “It is a pleasure to have Stephen at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School”.

Midwest Division:
November – Chris Bigras (Owen Sound Attack)
October – Jacob Jammes (London Knights)

Central Division:
November – Damian Bourne (Mississauga Steelheads)
October – Connor Burgess (Sudbury Wolves)

East Division:
November – Stephen Pierog (Peterborough Petes)
October – Jacob Blair (Ottawa 67’s)
