Petes Sign Nelson Armstrong from St. Lawrence

Press Release

The Peterborough Petes today announced that they have signed 19 year old left defenceman Nelson Armstrong from St. Lawrence University in Canton New York.

Armstrong, a 6’1”, 205lbs native of Peterborough was in his sophomore year at St. Lawrence University.  Prior to attending St. Lawrence, Nelson played with the LiftLock Stars Tier II where he was a runner up for the Rookie of the Year in the Ontario Provincial Hockey League.  He contributed both offensively and defensively for the Peterborough LiftLock Stars in his final season of junior hockey recording 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points which included four power play goals, two shorthanded goals and a game winner. He helped his team to a third place finish in the East Division of the OPHL. He attended Crestwood Secondary School and played field lacrosse in addition to ice hockey.

“We added Nelson to our 50 man protected list in the fall of 2010 while he was playing for the Peterborough LiftLock Stars after the Sarnia Sting deleted him from their 50 Man Protected list” Says Petes Director of Player Personnel Mike Oke. “He was originally Sarnia's 10th Round Pick, 192nd Overall in the 2009 OHL Draft.   Since that time I have followed his progress at St. Lawrence and checked in regularly with his advisor to see how he is doing.”

“I am excited to join the Peterborough Petes organization and be part of the team” says Nelson Armstrong.  “I look forward to playing for the coaches and being a leader.”

In February 2011 Nelson was selected to the OJHL 1st Team All Prospects Team and in April 2011 was selected to play as a member of Team Canada U20 team at the Three Nations Cup in Helsinki, Finland.

Nelson will wear #22 for the Petes when they host the Guelph Storm on Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
