Warriors' Maher commits to NCAA Div. I Bentley for 2011/12 season

Press Release

The British Columbia Hockey League's Westside Warriors are pleased to announce 20-year old defenseman Matt Maher has accepted a scholarship to attend Bentley College and suit up for the NCAA Division I Falcons for the 2011/12 season.

Maher will return to the Warriors for the 2010/11 campaign as he prepares for the jump to college a year from now, and will be counted on to be one of the team's leaders both on and off the ice.

“This is an exciting day for Matt, as he has worked hard to secure a future in the game and an NCAA Scholarship,” says Warriors Head Coach/GM Darren Yopyk. “Bentley has recruited a very good young man who will be a tremendous asset to their institution on the ice, in the classroom, and in their community. Coach Soderquist and his staff have done an excellent job at Bentley, and Matt will help them to continue their rise to the upper echelon of the Atlantic Hockey Conference.”

The Avon, Connecticut native proved a solid addition to the Warriors' blueline in his first BCHL season, suiting up in all but two of the team's 60 regular season games. He chipped in two goals and eight assists and added one more point in 11 postseason games.

“As an organization, we continue to demonstrate we are meeting our mandate of developing players and moving them forward in their hockey and academic careers. We are proud that the majority of players that play for us secure scholarships in either the NCAA or in Canada, in the CIS or ACAC.”

The Westside Warriors congratulate Matt for achieving his goal of a securing an NCAA scholarship.
