Frederik Tiffels Commits to Western Michigan University

Press Release

MUSKEGON, Michigan (February 21st) – The Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud to announce that Forward Frederik Tiffels has decided to play his college hockey for the Western Michigan Broncos of the newly-formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) following the conclusion of his USHL career.

Tiffels, the Cologne, Germany native, was a second-round pick (17th overall) by the Lumberjacks in the 2012 USHL Entry Draft. This season, Tiffels currently has 20 points (2 goals and 18 assists) 36 games played to go along with a plus-12 rating.

“I took a couple of trips down (to Kalamazoo) and I was impressed with what the university had to offer in terms of academics and hockey facilities,” said Tiffels. “The coaching staff made me feel welcomed and right at home. It also helped that coach (Andy) Murray spoke fluent German, which made the visits there more comfortable and was a big selling point for me.”

This season, Tiffels got the chance to play for the German National Under-20 Team in 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia where he played in six games and helped his team stay in the top division for next year’s championship. Prior to playing for the Under-20 Team, Tiffels also played for the German National Under-18, Under-17, and Under-16 Teams in various IIHF tournaments the past two seasons totaling 20 points (9 goals and 11 assists) in 38 games played.

Prior to coming to the Lumberjacks, Tiffels spent the previous two seasons with the Jungadler Mannheim Under-20 Team out of the Deutsche Nachwuchsliga (DNL), which is the top junior league in Germany. In his two seasons with the team, Tiffels tallied 68 points (18 goals and 50 assists) to go along with an astounding plus-61 rating in 84 total games played between regular season and playoffs.

Prior to playing for Jungadler Mannheim, Tiffels spent the beginning of the 2010-11 season playing for the Mannheimer ERC Under-16 Team out of the Schüler-Bundesliga (Schüler-BL) piling up 18 points (7 goals and 11 assists) in only four games played.
