Team Captains Announced

Press Release

The Sudbury Wolves are proud to announce that forward MICHAEL MACDONALD has been named Team Captain for the 2011-12 season – the club’s 40th Anniversary season. MACDONALD, 20, is playing in his third and final season in the Ontario Hockey League and recently returned from an injury that had kept him out of the lineup since the start of the season.

The Sudbury Wolves acquired MACDONALD one year ago in a trade with the London Knights. MACDONALD got off to a great start with the Wolves last season and was named the team’s Player-of-the-Month for December. MACDONALD finished the season with 18 goals. In his rookie OHL season with the London Knights, the Thunder Bay native recorded 25 goals, 20 assists for 45 points in 60 games.

“We are very happy to finally name Michael MacDonald as our captain this season,” said Head Coach Trent Cull. “With his recent injury, he has shown great leadership on and off the ice in dealing with his adversity. We feel he will be a great team leader for our club.”

MACDONALD earned one assist in his first game back with the team last Friday night when the Wolves defeated the Oshawa Generals 6-4. The 5’11”, 180 lb skilled forward plays on the wing and centre and ¬is considered an excellent two-way forward. He will be an important part of the Wolves’ power play and penalty-killing units as well.

“It means a lot to be named captain,” said Michael MacDonald, “It means a lot of responsibility both on and off the ice and I think I‘ve learned a lot over the years from other team captains including last year’s captain Marcus Foligno. I am going to try and follow in his footsteps.”

JOSH MCFADDEN, 20, will serve as a co-captain with a permanent ‘A’ on his jersey. MICHAEL SGARBOSSA, CHARLIE DODERO, JUSTIN SEFTON and FRANK CORRADO will serve as ‘Alternate’ captains this season on a rotating basis.

“Josh McFadden will be a very strong co-captain and we are very pleased with our young leadership that we have involved with the team. They are all young leaders in the making,” Cull added.

MACDONALD’s first game as the Wolves’ newly appointed team captain will be this weekend when the Wolves travel to Kitchener to visit the high-flying Rangers on Friday night. The Wolves will travel to Guelph on Saturday to play the Storm and wrap-up the two-game road trip.

Recent captains of the Wolves include: MARCUS FOLIGNO, JOHN KURTZ, GEROME GIUDICE, MARC STAAL & ZACH STORTINI. Some of the other former greats that have worn the ‘C’ for the Wolves include: Mike Foligno, Pat Verbeek, Derek MacKenzie, Mike Fisher and Rory Fitzpatrick.
