Press Release
The Portland Winterhawks have acquired the rights to defenseman Garrett
Haar from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a conditional pick in
the 2014 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.
Haar, 6’1”, 198
pounds, enters his 20-year-old campaign after playing the previous two
seasons with Western Michigan University. Last season he played 22 games
as a sophomore and posted three goals and six assists for nine points.
As a freshman in 2011-12, Haar had one goal and seven assists for eight
points in 36 games.
Haar was drafted in the seventh round, 207th
overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 2011 National Hockey League
Entry Draft.
“Garrett is a promising defenseman who will bring
size and experience to our defensive core,” said Portland Winterhawks
General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “He plays a solid
two-way game and we’re looking forward to having him join us this
season.”
The acquisition of Haar gives the Hawks two of a
possible three 20-year-olds for next season, along with forward Shane
McColgan, whom the Hawks traded for earlier this month.
