Shoot For The Cure Raises Over $10,000

Press Release

The Grande Prairie Storm has gone over the $50,000 mark through its partnership with Brekkaas Vacuum & Tank's Shoot For The Cure.

The annual breast cancer fundraiser held on Oct. 15 during a game against the St. Albert Steel this year raised $10,200 to bring the five-year total to well over $50,000 for the five years Shoot For The Cure has been held at a Storm hockey game.

"We would like to thank the Grande Prairie Storm and Brekkaas Vacuum & Tank Ltd for their continuous support over the past five years." says Lisa Heck, Revenue Development Coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, "The money raised has been helping to make a significant impact in the fight against breast cancer and we couldn't do this without the support of events like Shoot For The Cure."

For the past four years Storm players have worn pink jerseys. The first year the Storm goalie wore a pink goalie mask and the players used pink sticks.

"To average of $10,000 per year is beyond the expectations we had when we started Shoot For The Cure in 2006," said Storm business manager Don Moon. "We thought if we could raise a few hundred dollars each year we'd be happy, but now this annual event has kinda exploded and has turned into a pretty neat fund-raiser in the community."

Each year a new pink jersey is designed by Nine 10 Brand Stylists and they are auctioned off during the Shoot For The Cure game. Fans at the game also purchased Frisbees and tossed them onto the ice for a chance to win a trip for two anywhere WestJet flies. The Cancer Society also sold game tickets at a discounted price of $10 with half the proceeds going towards the fund-raiser.

"We are already had discussions as to how we can make the 2011 Brekkaas Shoot For The Cure better," said Moon. "We have a few ideas and we'll be getting together with Lisa at the Cancer Society and Brekkaas so see how we can improve the event."

Next major fundraiser the Storm will be involved in is the Co-op Salute The Red - which raises funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and also a salute to the military and RCMP. Storm players are currently involved in a competition to design a red jersey for that event, which is being held on Jan. 21.
