Stecher commits to Nebraska-Omaha

Press Release

The British Columbia Hockey League's Penticton Vees are pleased to announce that defenceman Troy Stecher has committed to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha and suit up for the NCAA Division I Mavericks for the 2012/13 hockey season.

As a sixteen-year-old rookie, Stecher has recorded five points and twelve penalty minutes in fifteen games. Troy is one of just four 16-year-olds that plays defense in the BCHL and has been a significant contributor to the Vees' 12-4 record to start to the season. At times Stecher has played on the team's top blueline pairing with team captain Derik Johnson.

“We are very excited for Troy being able to secure a scholarship to a great program in UNO," says Vees Head Coach and GM Fred Harbinson “Troy and his family believe that the NCAA route is the best for his long-term goals. Our organization is happy to provide a stepping stone for Troy to move on to the next stage of his hockey career at UNO”

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is in their first year of play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), which has won more NCAA Championships than any other Conference in College Hockey.

The Mavericks have played the previous eleven seasons in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Troy Stecher is the thirteenth player on the Vees 2010-2011 roster to secure an NCAA scholarship, more than any other BCHL team.

Stecher joins teammates Stefan Nicholishen, James Polk, and Steve Iacobellis as players committed to the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks.
