Ducks sign Deschamps

The Ducks announced on Thursday that they have signed center Nicolas Deschamps to a three-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

Deschamps, 19 (1/6/90), appeared in 65 games with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in 2008-09, scoring 24-41=65 points with 40 penalty minutes (PIM). He ranked third among the Sagueneens in scoring and second in assists. He scored a career high 1-3=4 points for Chicoutimi on three separate occasions last season vs. Rimouski (Dec. 27) and Baie-Comeau (Jan. 31 and Feb. 22). Deschamps also appeared in four QMJHL Playoff contests, earning 3-1=4 points including a two-goal effort in Game Four of the first round vs. Rimouski on Mar. 25. The 6-1, 185-pound center made his professional debut with Iowa of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2008-09. Deschamps appeared in the Chops’ final two games of the regular season, collecting an assist on Apr. 11 vs. Quad City.

A native of Lasalle, Quebec, Deschamps earned QMJHL All-Rookie Team honors in 2007-08 during his first season with Chicoutimi. He led all league rookies in scoring, winning the Michel Bergeron Trophy as best offensive rookie and earning Rookie of the Month honors in both November 2007 and January 2008. Deschamps completed the season second on the Sagueneens in scoring while also being named the Best Defensive Forward in the QMJHL. He was selected by Anaheim in the second round (35th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. His international experience includes representing Team Canada at the 2008 Under-18 World Championships and the 2008 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.
