Mariners hire new Head Coach

Press Release

The Yarmouth Mariners Junior “A” Hockey club is pleased to announce that Dartmouth native, Lindsay Horne has been hired as the team’s new Head Coach. Horne begins his duties effective immediately.

Horne comes to the Mariners with several years experience at the Major Midget level, including back to back Air Canada Cup National Midget Championship appearances in 2001 and 2002 with the Dartmouth Subways. The 2002 version of the Subways, which included current Mariner Assistant Coach and Assistant GM Timothy Garden-Cole, captured the Silver Medal, which still remains as the highest finish ever by an Atlantic Canada representative.

Most recently, Horne was the Head Coach and GM of the Valley Wildcats Major Midgets, where he inherited a program that was on the brink of extinction after it folded in 2004. Two short years later, the Valley program, which included current Mariners Carl Hayes, Andrew Walker and ex-Mariner Michael Best, had the most productive season ever in their history and fell a few games shy of advancing to the Atlantic Regional Championships. This turnaround led to Horne being the unanimous choice for the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League’s “Coach of the Year” award in 2006. Horne left the program in 2008 after the birth of his second child.

“I’m extremely excited to join the Mariner’s organization” said Horne, the newly appointed coach, who is also the Atlantic & USA regional scout for the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League added his familiarity with the team and staff will be a bonus come training camp “I’m really looking forward to working alongside with Assistants Timothy and Luke (Beck) as well as GM Mark Cole. Having been part of the organization the last few years, I know where they are and we know where we are heading. The group of us will be very much in tune with what the plan is here in Yarmouth. Now it’s just a matter of rolling up our sleeves”

“Lindsay has been close with our club, including travelling with the team in the latter part of last season, he is a very motivated and dedicated individual with an eagerness to advance in hockey” Stated Mark Cole, “We will have a very hard working, energetic team with the possibility of 16 returning veterans and are looking forward to a competitive training camp and the start of the season”.

Mariners Season Tickets are on sale to the public now at the Mariners Center Box Office. Stay tuned for more Mariners personnel announcements in the coming days.
