Here is the rationale which led to this decision:
- There was a race for the puck which was going towards the boards at the face off circle. The player left from the front of the net and took eight strides.
- As his opponent preceded him, the player turned slightly to the right and hit his opponent, directly on his back—without slowing down—and threw him into the board.
- Even though his opponent turned at the last moment and made himself vulnerable, the player never slowed down nor tried to partially avoid contact.
- The speed of the player, the force of impact and the opponent’s gesture were considered in this decision.
- No injury was sustained following this gesture.
