Voice of the Clippers Marshall named Broadcaster of the Year

Press Release

The British Columbia Hockey League is pleased to announce Nanaimo Clippers play-by-play man Dan Marshall has been named the TEAM 1040 Broadcaster of the Year.

Marshall just completed his 12th season of BCHL hockey and fifth in Nanaimo. In addition to radio broadcasts of all 60 Clippers games, Marshall hosts an hour-long show Monday evenings focused on the Clippers and the BCHL. This is in on top of his full-time job at his station which has him doing morning and afternoon news and sports reports.

The Coquitlam native was honoured to be chosen.

“It’s very special, very humbling because now there are 16 teams that all have excellent broadcasters,” said the 37-year-old. “When I came into the league, there were maybe a handful of guys doing media for their teams but now everyone is. It’s a great fraternity to be a part of.”

A product of the broadcast communications program at BCIT, Marshall spent seven seasons in Penticton covering the Panthers/Vees franchise and moved to Nanaimo for the 2007-08 season. He has branched out into television as well, having written and hosted Central Vancouver Island sports program Game On and now working on The Locker Room.

“Dan is an exceptional play-by-play broadcaster and puts in the time to ensure he’s prepared every time he goes on the air,” said BCHL communications director Brent Mutis. “He is a real asset to not only the Clippers but the City of Nanaimo and the BCHL.”

In November, Marshall was part of a four-man team that called games at Hockey Canada’s World Junior A Challenge at the Langley Events Centre. For the coming season, he is on the organizing committee for the Western Canada Cup being hosted by the Clippers April 26 to May 5, 2013.
