Fort McMurray, AB to Host 2015 Western Canada Cup

 CALGARY, Alberta (November 23rd, 2013) – The Alberta Junior Hockey League, in partnership with the Canadian Junior Hockey League, have awarded the community of Fort McMurray, Alberta as the host of the 2015 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup.

The champions of the British Columbia Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, and Manitoba Junior Hockey League will participate in a five-team tournament with the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons for the 2015 Western Canada Cup. The 13-game tournament will include a round-robin schedule followed by two semifinal games and a championship game. The Western Canada Cup Champion and the runner-up will both represent Western Canada at the 2015 RBC Cup National Junior A Championship.

Congratulations to the community of Fort McMurray and the Oil Barons on its selection to host the 2015 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup”, said AJHL Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk. “All three AJHL communities presented high quality bids and were qualified to execute an amazing event.”

The communities of Brooks and Lloydminster also presented host bids to the AJHL Board of Governors at the AJHL Semi Annual Meeting held today in Red Deer, Alberta.

“I would like thank the BCHL, SJHL and the MJHL for endorsing the bids, and the AJHL looks forward to welcoming Junior A hockey fans across Western Canada in 2015 and continuing the momentum of the event in Fort McMurray,” added Bartoshyk.

Fort McMurray was the host of the 2000 RBC Cup National Junior A Championship and has a successful track record for hosting major sporting events.   “We are proud of our region, our city and our team and are anxious to showcase them all to the fans of the Western teams,” said Fort McMurray Oil Barons President Len Clarke.

The Nanaimo Clippers and the BCHL were the hosts of the inaugural Western Canada Cup in 2013.  The 2014 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup will be hosted by the Dauphin Kings and the MJHL from April 26th to May 4th. 2014.
