Waterloo teddy bear toss for Thanksgiving

Press Release

Each year in late November, Cedar Valley families share time together during the Waterloo Black Hawks’ annual Thanksgiving game, and – regardless of the final score – they leave Young Arena feeling good about being part of a tradition which helps less fortunate children during the holidays.

The Black Hawks and K98.5 invite fans to participate in the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss during Waterloo’s Thanksgiving matchup versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.  When the Hawks score their first goal of the game, thousands of stuffed animals will rain down onto the ice from all over the arena.  The Teddy Bear Toss began less than eight minutes into last season’s Thanksgiving contest, set in motion by a goal scored by Zach Stepan.  The Hawks went on to an exciting 4-3 win.

“I’ve always felt this is one of the biggest nights of the season,” said Bucky Doren, morning show host on K98.5.  “It’s an exciting game with a big crowd whenever Cedar Rapids comes to Party Town, but the best part is seeing the community come together to support a great cause.”

All of the toys collected will be donated to Toys for Tots and other local children’s organizations.  For that reason, the Black Hawks ask that all teddy bears be new and still include their store tags.  A limited number of teddy bears will also be available from the Express Employment Professionals Fan Service table for a $2 donation to Toys for Tots.
