FUTURE SAINT COMMITS TO COLORADO COLLEGE

Press Release

One of the Fighting Saints’ future players will be coming to Dubuque with a college commitment in hand. Garrett Cecere, who will join the Fighting Saints in 2012, has signed up to play his college hockey at Colorado College, beginning in either 2013 or 2014. Colorado College, which currently competes in the WCHA, will become one of the charter members of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in 2013, along with Denver, North Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota-Duluth, and Miami University.

Cecere, a West Des Moines native who was selected by the Fighting Saints with their fifth pick in the 2011 Future’s Draft, spent last season with Shattuck-St. Mary’s U16 team. In 44 games as a defenseman, Cecere totaled 27 points and 50 penalty minutes for the Sabres. He will spend this year on the Fighting Saints Affiliate List while playing for the Janesville Jets in the NAHL.

Cecere has had a busy off-season to this point. He spent the early part of August with the Team USA U17 Select Team at the Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Playing in all four games for Team USA, Cecere logged an assist as the Americans swept the tournament and captured the gold medal.

Fighting Saints Head Coach Jim Montgomery extended his congratulations to Cecere, and gave Fighting Saints fans an idea of what to expect from the 5’9 blue-liner.
“Congratulations to Garrett Cecere on his commitment to Colorado College. Garrett is a fierce competitor with great hockey sense,” he said. “He will be an anchor on our d-corps, and he has the intangibles that we look for in Fighting Saint players. Our fans will love his style of play.”

When he arrives at Colorado College, Cecere will have two Tigers teammates who have also played for the Fighting Saints, Jordan DiGiando and Scott Wamsganz, both of whom will begin their college hockey careers in the fall after having won the Clark Cup with the Fighting Saints last season.

Garrett’s brother Nick has also played in the USHL, tallying 7 points in 58 games for the Lincoln Stars last season. He will begin his college career this season at Michigan Tech.
