Holmberg named WHL player of the month

CALGARY, AB. – The Western Hockey League announced today that forward Mitch Holmberg of the Spokane Chiefs has been named the WHL Player of the Month for September/October 2013.

The 20-year-old forward from Sherwood Park, AB, tallied 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points to go with a +16 rating through 16 games in September and October.  Holmberg recorded at least one point in all 16 games he has played for the Chiefs, recorded multiple points in 11 of those 16 games, and multiple goals in six games.  The 5’10”, 175-lb winger started the season with three consecutive four-point games, including netting a hat trick in the Chiefs’ season opener on September 21st.  Holmberg’s 18 goals leads all WHL players in that category, while his 38 points puts him in the WHL scoring lead.  Six of Holmberg’s 18 goals came on the power play while four of his goals were game winners.

Holmberg’s consistent play helped the Chiefs post an 11-5-0-0 record in September and October, keeping them among the top Clubs in the WHL’s Western Conference.  His outstanding play for the Chiefs saw him selected among the Three Stars in nine of the 16 games he played, including an impressive seven 1st Star selections.

Holmberg is in his fifth and final WHL campaign with the Spokane Chiefs, and has amassed 103 goals and 216 points in 258 career regular season games.  He was the Chiefs’ first-round pick, 21st overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.

Holmberg’s accomplishments make hima deserving choice as the WHL Player of the Month for September/October.
