Mississauga Franchise Unveils New Name

Press Release

Mississauga, ON – May 24 – After a successful “Name the Team” contest, the ownership of Mississauga’s new OHL franchise is proud to unveil a new look and feel for the 2012-2013 OHL season. Over 1,400 respondents submitted their votes last week, and we are thrilled with the interest and responses with over 110 different name suggestions and we are proud to announce that the new franchise will be named the MISSISSAUGA STEELHEADS!

The newly named Steelheads Hockey Club, led by majority owner and Mississauga businessman Elliott Kerr, wanted to engage the community right from the start and solicit the help of all Mississauga residents to name the new team. “The hockey fans in Mississauga deserve to have a team they can call their own and we are thrilled with the response we received from the community. The Name the Team contest is just the first step in engaging our fan base. Our players and staff will be out in the community, helping to continue to grow minor hockey and support the City of Mississauga “said Kerr.

Named after the Steelhead trout that swim up the Credit River, it was important that the new team name reflect Mississauga’s heritage while also appealing to fans of all ages. Early in the development of Mississauga, the Credit River was a lifeline for the growth of the city. As described in the contest last week, the Steelhead is a symbol of resilience, fighting through the rough river water as predators and anglers vie for the prized fish, Steelheads use their strength and drive to succeed in overcoming these obstacles in order to reach their ultimate destination.

The team’s website www.mississaugasteelheads.com can be accessed next week and will be launched fully in early summer. This will be your source for Mississauga Steelheads info all season long. The team will create a landing page prior to the full website release for fans to access. For sponsorship and season ticket information email Scott Rogers at srogers@landmarksport.com
