Ron Tugnutt Steps a side as Petes Assistant

Press Release

The Peterborough Petes announced today that Ron Tugnutt will be stepping aside from his full-time role as Assistant Coach with the Petes and has been hired as a full-time goaltending consultant for Hockey Canada for the 2011-12 season. Ron will remain with the Petes on a part-time basis as a goaltending consultant.

“The Peterborough Petes are very happy for Ron Tugnutt and we are also extremely proud that Ron has been recognized by Hockey Canada to be their full time Goaltending Consultant” says Petes General Manager David Reid. “Ron has been a huge part of our group and we know that Hockey Canada is acquiring an excellent hockey man, a diligent worker and a first class person. The Peterborough Petes wish Ron all the best with Hockey Canada.”

“Ron did a great job with us last season and although we will miss what he brings to our team on a daily basis, we are pleased that he will still be available to work with our goaltenders” added Petes Head Coach Mike Pelino. “I am confident that he will do an outstanding job with Hockey Canada and on behalf of our coaches and players we want to wish him all the best.”

In his new role with Hockey Canada, Tugnutt will be scouting for Canada’s national men’s teams as well as working with Hockey Canada’s development department to develop and improve resources for goaltenders and goaltending coaches.

Tugnutt will continue to work closely with Canada’s National Junior Team and National Men’s Under-18 Team, scouting and assisting goaltenders for Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence.

Ron Tugnutt, 43, has worked with Hockey Canada in a part-time capacity over the past two seasons. He served as goaltending consultant for Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2010 and 2011 IIHF World Junior Championships, winning two silver medals, and will continue as the goaltending coach for Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship. Tugnutt also served as goaltending consultant with Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team at the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, finishing fourth. He served as an assistant coach with the OHL’s Peterborough Petes in 2010-11. As a player, Tugnutt spent 17 seasons in the NHL and represented Canada twice, at the 1993 and 1999 IIHF World Championships.

“We are excited about Ron’s new position with Hockey Canada and look forward to working with him on a full-time basis,” said Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations/national teams. “The experience that he has, both in the NHL and internationally, will have a definite impact on our goaltenders, and we feel the way he works and thinks reflects our organization.”
