McKegg named captain of the Otters

Press Release

The Erie Otters have announced that center Greg McKegg has been named as the 11th team captain in Otters history. Joining McKegg as alternate captains are center Mike Cazzola, defenseman Derek Holden and right wing Shawn Szydlowski.

McKegg will assume his new role once he returns from Toronto Maple Leafs training camp. The third-year forward picked up a goal in his preseason debut in a 3-2 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday.

Cazzola returns to the Otters after a terrific season in which he posted 36 goals. The Guelph, Ont. native skated on a line with McKegg and departed captain Zack Torquato to form one of the most formidable trios in the OHL.

Holden enters his first year wearing the “A” on his jersey after joining the Otters in a mid-season trade from Peterborough last October. The steady blueliner led Otters defensemen with 11 goals last season.

Szydlowski will wear the “A” for the second straight season. The Michigan native recently returned from Ottawa Senators rookie camp and enters his overage season with the Otters.

The Otters open their 15th season of competition in the Ontario Hockey League tonight when they travel to Brampton to meet the Battalion in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Powerade Centre. The game can be heard live on FOX Sports Radio AM 1330 The FAN and on-line at www.ottershockey.com (presented by the James H. Cross Company) beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.

The Otters return to Erie to host the Saginaw Spirit at 7:00 p.m. with their 15th home opener at Tullio Arena. The event begins with a free pre-game party at Jerry Uht Park at 5:00 p.m. featuring entertainment by Thirst N Howl and food and drink for a reduced price. The first 2,500 fans into the game receive a free magnetic schedule courtesy of Springhill Suites. Before the game, the Otters will retire the No. 18 of the late Vinny Scott.
