USHL Fall Classic Wrap Up – Day 2

Fargo Force 2 vs. Muskegon Lumberjacks 4
John Parker and Matt DeBlouw both scored shorthanded goals just 57 seconds apart on the same penalty as the Muskegon Lumberjacks won their first game of the Fall Classic.  Charlie Taft gave the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead in their period before Fargo closed the gap to one after goals by Colten St. Clair and Joe Rehkamp.  A late rush by the Force wasn't enough as Jordan Masters sealed the victory with an empty net goal for Muskegon.  Paul Berrafato made 20 saves in goal to earn the win for the Lumberjacks.

Youngstown Phantoms 1 vs. Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 5
The RoughRiders stayed hot offensively with five goals after putting up seven in their opening game of the Fall Classic.  Cedar Rapids jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including three power play goals.  Ryan McGrath and Thomas Fallen each scored a goal for the second straight day and Stephen Collins netted a pair of goals for the RoughRiders.  Nick Lappin added a power play tally while goaltenders Cody Campbell and Brady Hjelle combined for 26 saves in the victory.  Cody Strang recorded the lone goal for the Phantoms.

Waterloo Black Hawks 3 vs. Chicago Steel 6
A wild second period was the story as the teams combined for six goals over a span of 4:35 in the frame.  Cole Gunner led the way for Chicago scoring a pair of goals and Danny Mattson collected three assists for the club.  Returning Black Hawks Jamie Hill and Tyler Zepeda scored just 14 seconds apart in the second period to pull their team within one, but it wasn't enough as the Steel closed out the victory.  Sam Windle and Theo DiPauli each netted a goal for Chicago and Adam Krause notched two points (1g, 1a).  Adam Miller made 35 saves to earn the victory for the Steel.

Des Moines Buccaneers 3 vs. Indiana Ice 8
The Ice came out firing on all cylinders as six different players tallied a goal in the first period to help the squad cruise to victory.  Daniil Tarasov had a huge day putting up five points (2g, 3a) for the Ice while teammate Adam Erne also netted two goals.  The Buccaneers scored three goals, all on special teams (two power plays, one shorthanded), including a shorthanded marker by Peter Stoykewych.  Indiana goaltender Casey DeSmith recorded the win making 21 saves.

Tri-City Storm 3 vs. Dubuque Fighting Saints 4 (SO)
Dubuque forward T.J. Schlueter scored a goal against his former club, but the Storm used two shorthanded goals, including one by Dan Kolomatis with 33 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to the extra session.  In the shootout, the Storm converted three of four attempts to claim the victory.  Cody Murphy scored for the second straight game at the Fall Classic for Tri-City and Cass Mappin also tallied for the Storm.  Zemgus Girgensons and Joakim Ryan scored in regulation for Dubuque.  Storm goaltender Steven Bolton made 22 saves in regulation and stopped three attempts in the shootout to earn the win.

Lincoln Stars 4 vs. Green Bay Gamblers 5
Green Bay built a 3-1 lead including goals by returning players Max Hartner and Grant Arnold, but the Stars would battle back to take the lead in the third period.  Andrew Schmit and John McCarron scored for the Stars while Jared Hanson collected two points (1g, 1a).  The lead changed again, this time for good when the Gamblers got power play goals from David Goodwin and Austin Czarnik in the third period on the way to the victory.  Stars goaltender Lukas Hafner made 38 saves in the loss while Gamblers netminder made 26 saves to claim the win.

Team USA 2 vs. Omaha Lancers 3
Team USA jumped ahead early scoring two goals within the first five minutes of the first period.  Tyler Biggs and Rocco Grimaldi light the lamp for Team USA.  Omaha clamped down defensively after that and pulled within one goal after Thomas O'Regan found the back of the net.  In the third period, Seth Ambroz took over scoring two goals in a span of 2:28 to lead the Lancers to a come-from-behind victory.  The Lancers held Team USA to just 16 shots as goaltender John Keeney stopped 14 to earn the win.  Team USA goaltender Matt McNeely made 29 saves in the loss.
