DEFENSEMAN JAKE DOWNING TRADED TO SIOUX FALLS

Press Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa – In preparation of the deadline to reduce the roster to 23 players, the Fighting Saints made a trade today, sending veteran defenseman Jake Downing to the Sioux Falls Stampede. In return, the Fighting Saints acquired a conditional 5th Round pick in the 2013 USHL Draft.

The Fighting Saints obtained Downing in May 2011 in a trade with the Omaha Lancers. In 57 total USHL games with Omaha and Dubuque, Downing has tallied two goals and seven assists. The Canton, MI native played 41 games for the Fighting Saints last year, registering a goal and six assists, and was a plus-12. Downing played two USHL preseason games for Dubuque this year, going pointless and registering 17 penalty minutes.

“This is the part of being a Head Coach and General Manager that you don’t like, when you have to inform a terrific young man like Jake Downing that you are moving him to another team in our league,” said Fighting Saints Head Coach and General Manager Jim Montgomery. “Jake has been an outstanding Dubuque Fighting Saint on and off the ice. We wish him all the best and know he is going to do great things in Sioux Falls and get a lot of minutes and playing time. At the same time, we have to look at ways to help out future. This was an opportunity that was in the best interest of most importantly Jake, but also the future of the Dubuque Fighting Saints.”

The Fighting Saints will announce the final roster for the regular season early this week. The regular season opens on Friday, September 28 versus the Tri-City Storm at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Puck drop is slated for 7:35 p.m for Opening Night, presented by American Trust.
