Chernyuk to Maine

My Maine Hockey Journal Story

Press Release

PITTSTON, PA – The Atlantic Metropolitan Hockey League and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Junior Knights are proud to announce that defenseman Konstantin Chernyuk (’98 birth year/Pittston, PA) has committed to the University of Maine Black Bears.

Chernyuk is a Russian-born defenseman who currently plays for the Junior Knights U16 AAA National team. As a 1998 birth year, he has played 19 games and has 3 goals and 11 assists in AYHL play. Just about to turn 16 years of age, the 6-foot-1-inch, 170 pound blue-liner still has much potential to grow in height and playing ability.

“You can’t teach size,” said U16 Assistant Coach Tom Kowal. “For a big kid, he has skill. With a little development, he should be a great asset for Maine.”

The University of Maine is based out of Orono, Maine. The Black Bears are the state’s only NCAA Division I school, and the men’s hockey team is the premier sports team of the institution. They play out of the very competitive NCAA Division I Hockey East Conference.
