Leipsic Denny's WHL player of the week

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ forward Brendan Leipsic is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 26, 2014.

Leipsic scored three goals and six assists for nine points along with a +9 rating in three games over the past week, helping the Winterhawks post a perfect 3-0-0-0 record in that span.

On Monday, January 20th, Leipsic tallied a goal and three assists while posting a +4 rating and earning 1st Star honors in a 5-2 victory over the visiting Vancouver Giants.  On Friday, January 24th, he also notched a goal and three assists and a +4 rating while being named the game’s 3rd Star in a 5-1 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips.  On Sunday, January 26th, Leipsic scored for a fifth straight game as the Winterhawks managed a 6-2 win in Everett.

Leipsic, a 19-year-old from Winnipeg, MB, is in his fourth season in the WHL with the Winterhawks.  The 2012-13 WHL scoring co-champion has amassed 29 goals and 63 points in just 38 games this season for the U.S. Division-leading Winterhawks.  A sixth-round pick, 112th overall, in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Leipsic has scored 122 goals and 274 points in 239 career WHL regular-season games.  Leipsic was chosen in the third round, 89th overall, by the Nashville Predators in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The WHL has also nominated Patrik Bartosak of the Red Deer Rebels for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award.  A 20-year-old from Koprivnice, CZE, Bartosak posted a 3-0-0-0 record with two shutouts in three road appearances over the past week, allowing just two goals on 123 shots for a 0.67 goals-against average and a .984 save percentage in that span.  On Wednesday, January 22nd, Bartosak stopped all 38 shots he faced to record a shutout while taking 1st Star honors in a 5-0 win in Prince Albert.  On Friday, January 24th, he turned aside 42 of 44 shots and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 3-2 triumph over the Blades in Saskatoon.  On Saturday, January 25th, he made 41 saves for his second shutout of the week and 11th of his WHL career while earning 1st Star honors in a 4-0 victory in Regina.  Bartosak, the 2012-13 WHL and CHL Goaltender of the Year, is in his third campaign with the Rebels.  He has posted a 71-41-5-3 record in 124 career WHL regular-season games for Red Deer.  Bartosak was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fifth round, 146th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.
