Matt Calvert bobblehead night

Press Release

Brandon, MB. -- One of the most popular players in recent Brandon Wheat Kings history will be featured on this year's MTS Connect Bobblehead Night on Saturday night when the Prince George Cougars pay their first visit to Westman Communications Group Place in two years.

The first 2,000 fans attending the game will receive a limited edition bobblehead, featuring the likeness of former Brandon co-captain Matt Calvert of the National Hockey League's Columbus Blue Jackets.

A 24-year old local product, Calvert played three seasons with the Wheat Kings including the 2009-10 campaign when he led Brandon to the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship Final against the Windsor Spitfires.

In 198 games with the Wheat Kings, the former AAA Midget star scored 99 goals and 230 points.

Since joining the Blue Jackets, the former fifth round draft choice (127th overall in 2008) has scored 25 goals and 49 points in 120 games. In 23 games this season, the 5'11" 187 lb center has scored five goals and 10 points, while accumulating 28 minutes in penalties.

A former Memorial Cup and WHL Eastern Conference All Star, Calvert won a number of team awards during his days as a Wheat Kings, including Most Popular, Fans Choice and Hardest Working.

During the off-season, Calvert lives and trains in Brandon.

The Wheat Kings enter Saturday's game with a record of 25-17-5-0, good for 55 points and second place in the WHL's Eastern Division - one point back of Swift Current - following Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Broncos.

Tickets to Saturday night's game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at wheatkings.com.

Game time is 7:30pm but the doors to Westman Place open at 6:30pm so fans are encourged to purchase their tickets early and be one of the first two thousand through the doors.

This marks the second and final Bobblehead Night of the 2013-14 season for the Wheat Kings. In November, two thousand fans had the opportunity to pick up one that featured current captain Ryan Pulock.
