The United States Hockey League today announced the CCM and Reebok player awards for the 21st week of the 2013-14 USHL regular season.
Winners include Joe Snively of the Sioux City Musketeers, recognized as CCM Forward of the Week; Zach Frye of the Lincoln Stars and Niklas Folin of the Omaha Lancers, chosen as co-recipients of CCM Defenseman of the Week; and Hayden Stewart of the Indiana Ice, named Reebok Goaltender of the Week.
Joe Snively, F, Sioux City Musketeers: Committed to Yale University, the forward had a career weekend, totaling six points (2g, 4a) to lead the Musketeers to a pair of wins. Friday night, the 18-year-old potted a goal and dished out a pair of assists in a 4-2 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers. It was more of the same on Saturday as Snively scored another goal and added two more helpers in a 5-3 win over the Tri-City Storm. The three-point nights equaled his USHL career high and gave him a total of nine multi-point efforts this season. Hailing from Herndon, Virginia, the 18-year-old ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 34 points (12g, 22a) in 37 games this year.
Zach Frye, D, Lincoln Stars: The veteran rearguard put together a monster weekend, posting five points (2g, 3a) and a plus-four on-ice rating as the Stars split a pair of games. Friday against the Fargo Force, the Spokane, Washington native had a career-high four points (1g, 3a), including the game-winning goal, and finished with a game high plus-three rating in a 5-3 victory. The next night against the Omaha Lancers, the 19-year-old scored the 10th goal of his career in a 7-3 loss. Committed to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Frye leads the Stars’ defensive corps in scoring with 18 points (6g, 12a) on the season, and has points in five of his last six games (4g, 5a).
Niklas Folin, D, Omaha Lancers: Skating in his second full USHL season, the defenseman nearly doubled his season point total, registering four points (1g, 3a) and helping the Lancers earn two wins. He scored his first USHL career goal, a power play tally, and added one assist in Friday’s 7-1 win over the Sioux Falls Stampede. The Gothenburg, Sweden native dished out two more assists in Saturday’s 7-3 win over Lincoln, the 30th victory of the season for Omaha. The 20-year-old also played a key role on special teams, helping the Lancers penalty kill go a perfect 7-for-7 and the power play convert 5-of-9 chances. Folin has totaled 10 points (1g, 9a) in 29 games this season.
Hayden Stewart, G, Indiana Ice: The 19-year-old was perfect on the weekend, stopping all 51 shots he saw to post back-to-back shutouts and lead the Ice to a sweep of the Youngstown Phantoms. On Friday night, he turned out a 17-save performance in a 3-0 win. He upped the ante on Saturday, blocking all 34 shots thrown at him to backstop his team to a 2-0 victory. The Rockford, Illinois native has won all five of his starts since being acquired by the Ice earlier this month, posting a 0.60 goals-against average and .973 save percentage over that span. Stewart has an overall 11-6-1 record this season, ranking fifth among USHL goaltenders with a 2.37 GAA and tenth with a .914 SV%.
